Official Cord Cutting Thread

Over the past 3 years, I have considered cutting the cord but I always call DTV and negotiate first. Have been able to negotiate their 225 CH package for ~$70/month including taxes plus get NFL Sunday Ticket for free. Last year they forgot to stop the NFL ST credit and it paid for my DTV services for about 5 months. I will eventually jump to YouTube TV. I do not believe my luck will continue in getting free Sunday Ticket

For anyone who wants to tell comcast to go f themselves, just switch to AT&T TV or Sling. (I definitely recommend ATt TV if you have ATT cell service) Yeah its just another bill but it's way cheaper than comcast and no contracts. No equipment to rent blah blah blah. It's worth it all day long. Yes I've kept my internet thru them but the bill hasnt gone up in 4 years unlike my cable which went up every few months. Plus i bought my own router/modem combo which has been going strong for 4 years, no more rental fees for their equipment and the thing functions flawlessly. Seemed like every 6 months with the comcast router I would have to go to the xfinity store and swap it out for a new one when it would suddenly stop working.

My point is...... dont think about ditching cable..... just do it. I've converted a lot of old timers who were scared of technology and they thanked me afterwards. You have nothing to lose.

One project I have given myself while marooned in my apartment in NYC is to look into ditching cable TV. The main hurdle in the past has been access to live sports, including the English Premier League, but there are options now online. Plus, for the next few weeks or months, access to live sports is obviously not a concern. Anyway, this thread is very useful for research so thanks for all of the input!

I believe you can get EPL on sling. As I mentioned earlier in this thread I prefer sling over what I use now (att tv) but sling did not have local channels for football. If you live in NYC then you are more than capable to receive local channels via antenna and if you were to go with sling theres an option for an add on box which you connect an antenna to and that would then integrate the antenna channels right into the sling app and even display them on the guide so it would look seamless. Unfortunately this was not an option for me since I'm not near any cities but should work for you.

Just enjoyed calling Comcast to cancel. What a horrible company. They don’t seem to realize it’s easier to maintain customers than try to find new ones and I got tired of crap service after having them for years. Just started ATandT tv the selection is fine but the on demand seems a little buggy. Added Netflix due to the stuck at home thing. I hope I can remedy the bugs in atandt as they have Turnerclassicmovies which is one of the best stations imo

Which package did you get? Do you have att cell service? I found on demand also to be buggy but luckily I keep up with series and rarely need to use the on demand features.

We got the third tier. I guess it’s a cheaper one but it has all the news and enough channels which was all I need. Add Netflix and what else do you need. I don’t think it’s cellular I use WiFi. Does cellular work better. I still use Comcast wifi as I don’t seem to have many choices around me. I hope they work on this on demand as it keeps screwing up my classic films and I get grumpy when bogart cuts out. Edward G Robinson as well.

I meant do you have your cell phones thru att? If so you can get hbo for free for being a loyal customer. I thought I had the 3rd package as well, 93 a month, it has more channels than I need as well as every channel I wanted. I find the on demand to be spotty for older stuff but works fine for new shows (within the last 5 years)

Oh I get you. As soon as I pay off our iPhones for sprint I’m going to switch to something else I’ll check out atandt. We pay 50 right now for the 3rd tier but it goes up to 93 in 12 months. Still much cheaper than Comcast. I think you are right about the older on demand as when I watch the new shows I think it only bugged once. Thanks for the cell info didn’t know that.

This may be off topic but has anyone tried Apple TV or Disney. I hear they are both a bit subpar but I’d never rule apple out of anything. Disney for that matter either.

Glad I cut the cord a while back. Amazon prime has some good movies and I’ve been getting a lot out of Netflix lately. Just got done binge watching Narcos and Narcos Mexico. Starting in to another Pablo Escobar series today. Not sure how it would work out if I still watched sports, but that’s not much of a factor lately

We have Disney+ and for $70 annually, feel it's a good deal, if for nothing else than NatGeo. The series Continent 7 is great.

We have Apple TV (came with our iphone). It is pretty worthless.

Netflix and Amazon Prime are the best, with Hulu closely behind

Disney+ is good for the money but prepare to be underwhelmed. If you like disney movies, star wars and marvel then it's got almost all of it. The original series are great but honestly you could just sign up for a month, binge the content and then cancel only to wait for more content to build up and then binge for another month. I paid the annual and have no regrets. When marvel starts putting out there MCU series its gonna be worth the 70 bucks 10 times over for me. Your mileage may vary. As I type this I'm sitting in my office with Gaurdians of the galaxy playing via D+ in the background lol.

The Disney history and current info content is great
The proposed marvel shows will be movie grade
The Mandalorian is awesome and there's all the star wars movies included
Jeff Goldblums series is fun and entertaining
Anything and everything in terms of disney movies included.

If nothing on that list intrigues you, then you may want to pass on Disney+

Cord cutter must haves IMO.....

Find a decent service (att tv, sling, hulu, ect)
Use your prime tv account (its 2020, you have Amazon prime right?)
Fill in the gaps with the cheapest package of Netflix.

This is the "FU Cable" starter pack.

This must be a new deal. I'm not complaining at 93 a month but if its 50 for the first year then I will definitely switch my parents over since they were on the fence.

EDIT***

Just went and looked and seen that theres actually 2 kinds of service although I'm confused as to what the diffrence is. Just to be clear, I have AT&T TV NOW but theres also one labeled ATT TV. The NOW service does not have a contract which is the route I'd personally travel when it comes to cord cutting. Prices seemed to on par with each other and the non NOW service looks like it uses their own cable box setup. Just my two cents but I dont want a contract or any of their hardware to worry about. The lower price deal was obviously not an option in the no contract version. Seems to me like they are trying to become the next cable service Haha.

Ya I got a little box for the WiFi service but I don’t have a smart TV yet. I’ve sold a bunch of them just never kept one. The little box doesn’t bother me as it doesn’t cost anything but the choices are a bit confusing. My wife actually got it as she hated Comcast so much after they kept dropping channels and raising the price. I didn’t mind she got it as I’ve wanted to dump Comcast I just didn’t know which one to pick. To the other gentleman I had amazon prime for a few months but went back to Netflix. I’m thinking of switching to hbo for a while just to change things up.

I said it earlier in this thread but maybe it was confusing but as long as you have a tv with hdmi (cant see anyone not having that) just buy an Amazon firestick and it basically turns any tv into a smart tv. On the main interface you can have all your apps in one place (picture down below for reference) and theres no need to switch inputs unless you have a dvd/bluray player or game console. There are plenty of options out there instead of the firestick but I personally find it to be the easiest cleanest option. I also like that it's so small you can hide it behind a wall mounted tv and there are zero wires showing. Makes for a real clean setup. When on sale the 4k stick is as low as $25 each.

Thanks dude I’m so dumb to all this stuff I actually thought firestick was just for amazon prime. We have the hdmi ports so this wouldn’t be an issue. I really like to download Tubi on the tv as well it’s free and not that many ads with a good selection

I agree but they are just getting started. Netflix is not as good for me as it used to be.

Surprisingly Crackle has some interesting stuff but commercials.

I need to resurrect this old thread as I don’t think I was fair to ATandT now TV. I was complaining about the signal freezing up and blaming ATandT. Come to find out it was the Comcast router I was using. I upgraded to a more powerful net gear router and have no more freeze on ATandT. So my cord cutting thing is working out so far.
