Hey the way the France thread went was shocking. Read all my posts and you will see the attempts to stop the train wreck. The opinions of some that don't get that this is a watch forum. A bit of fun and games but a watch forum. He got blasted for giving he's opinion to a few members that were fighting about their opinions.

Our little friendly site has grown and no political/ religious threads is the smartest thing posted this year. Thanks Al ( I won't tag him as I have seen this abused)

 

I think that is probably best. Those type of threads seem to cause a lot of friction, even more so than if you say you don t like speedies Anyway I am sure everyone hopes that he is just on holiday or taking a break and that he comes back soon. He is one of the true watchanistas on this forum and his contributions are appreciated by everyone on here(well at least about watches)

 

As a new guy here I can tell you I'll miss his generously shared knowledge.

As a vet of several various forums I can also say getting one's knickers in a twist over P&R opinions is lose/lose. You either need a thick skin or a don't-give-a-damn attitude to participate and enjoy that stuff. And be fairly insane, to boot.

 

can we just keep politics out completely? This is a friendly watch forum.

 

Archer was a huge asset to this community, but seriously he let a thread run him off? Why not just avoid the thread and not read it?

 

It only takes one or two holes to ruin any well-intentioned thread. A quick read of the thread in question will leave no doubt as to who is in that category. They'll probably show up here any minute.

If it makes anyone feel better to create a scapegoat, go right ahead. But if Al actually chose to quit the forum based on his subjective views of a discussion on a particular thread, that's on him.

 

Not sure if he is still hanging around, but I asked to send him three watches and he said he was planning a holiday and was not taking watches until the new year. Let's hope he is just on a well deserved vacation.

 

I'm not sure if I'm considered an hole since I disagreed with him in a civil manner, towards the end of the discussion, but I have two thoughts: One, I doubt he'd leave the forum over that. It didn't even devolve into name-calling or even (to my eye) the slightest disrespect of him. And two, I don't think calling those who disagreed with him (or anyone else, in that thread or others) an hole is going to help.

(And three - here in the States we actually censor the "hole" part, but not the three-letters immediately preceding it - perhaps out of deference to donkeys? )
