The two watches couldn't be more different. The SM300 is very similar looking to the 166.027 that you already have an enjoy. Maybe too duplicative and the JLC would sit better, and more unique, among your collection? You also have a lot of black dial watches, having white is a nice change.

Countdown bezels confuse me. Not sure why they exist at all LOL
Indeed I really like the 166.027, very authentic and just sits very right as a design, its proportions, shape, it's one of my best watches.

I'm a huge fan of Omega and I have at least a dozen of them. That being said, a JLC is the best watch that I own. There are very few companies that can combine art and engineering into spectacular watches. JLC is one of them.
Can't agree more. The JLC reverso 976 I own and my only JLC I have owned so far, is absolutely wonderfully designed and manufactured.

Great forum once again here, thank you everyone for the replies. Will have another think on the JLC and make a decision by next week. Cheers

Would go with the JLC. Ran into a similar issue with the Heritage 300 Seamaster of it being unreadable for much of the time.

It was a combo of the faux colored lume, matte dial, and the Aqua Terra hands with minimal lume, and the reflective nature of the sapphire glass.

It was a personal thing with the watch, sold it and haven't looked back.

I feel the same with my Seamaster 1957, the dial i don't mind but the faux lume hasn't grown on me. Also miss not having a date function, I don't want to keep looking at my phone for this.

The JLC triple as said is a classic and you will find yourself wearing it a lot. Even though mine is RG I went with a more rustic strap and it’s on my wrist frequently. Understated elegance. I also own a Grand Reverso Duo.

Hard choice!
Like both watches. I would gravitate more to the JLC.
If the date function is important but no need for the moon, i would go for the simpler Master control date. Cheaper to purchase, cheaper to service, a very reliable movement.
Used to own one and still miss it, maybe one day i will get one again.

Nice piece what you had there, super elegant. As someone else mentioned above, JLC blend engineering and art very well, makes the brand stand out from Omega, Rolex, etc. I also like the fact that many non-watches people don't know the brand at all, makes their watches a bit more special.

If you aren't gelling with the 300 and want a dress watch, this is an easy choice- that JLC is fantastic.

One final question please. If I go ahead with the JLC purchase I am planning to trade in the Seamaster 1957 trilogy (ref is 234.10.39.20.01.001). I had it for 5 years, first owner, not serviced, have box and papers, original straps never used as I had the watch on an aftermarket leather strap. Watch has been used for a few months each year so has a few bumps and light scratches. Bezel has two small spots from a light knock at some point, they are visible.

Paid £5300 in May 2020 from authorised Omega dealer in Glasgow, UK. Is a £3000-3500 trade in prices realistic you think? Trade in retailer is a UK chain, luxury watches specialists, reputable, 2-year warranty for the JLC (used watch).

Watch prices are down these days from the 2020-22 peaks so I am trying to be realistic here.

Any thoughts are welcome!

Well... it's a pretty respected reference for the most part, but as demand for these watches is down and it is slightly off the beaten path, you might have some difficulty selling it quickly.

Ultimately this is up to you and it depends on how much you value getting your top dollar versus the speed at which you get your new watch. Maybe get the trade-in value quote from a dealer, and then find someone who wants this reference and is willing to pay a bit more? That's going to take some time investment though, and then you have the hassle of dealing with a private buyer.

I don't think that's a decision I could make for someone else honestly.

Good points ErichPryde. I have sold a couple of watches on Chrono in the past and they take a lot of time to shift in my experience. Plus too much price haggling that I have the patience and time for. The particular JLC is rare in the UK at least, yes I can find them overseas on Chrono etc but for that kind of money I prefer to view the watch and make sure everything looks right rather having to post it back and lose import taxes expenses in case something is wrong with it.

Shame the Seamaster has lost 40% of its value from new. But maybe that's normal when you buy brand new. I can see on Chrono, well used examples like mine, private offers go for around £4300 which typically means they will accept a sale at £3800-4000. I am getting a trade in offer for £3100, could be on the low side. The Seamaster will need a service soon and a new bezel to make it look nice again.

How much are they asking for the used JLC? This is like trading in a car to buy a new one, you don't want to get burnt both ways.

Market price for the Trilogy is probably close to 5k USD, at least here stateside. I see them listed higher on ebay, and there's one currently listed here on omegaforums for (actually, it just sold- probably for close to 4.4k euros, or around 5k USD- maybe just under that). If I were a buyer, I'd think I was getting a good deal at 4 to 4.5kUSD, but at that price I'd be wondering what the condition was like. I'm not a buyer though and nor soliciting you to sell it to me, just make that clear.

You can always check watchcharts as well for some idea of what it might be worth. Maybe you would get some interest if you hit the post comp minimum here - you've been a member for a while, and if you hit 200 posts you could list it. Always an option.

Do the trade, you are currently holding onto a watch that you don't love because of a specific aesthetic feature you dislike.

Yep, just do the deal, get your new watch and move on. Trying to squeeze the last bit of juice is time consuming and usually not worth the time and effort.
