No. 6 end-piece scuffing…

I’ve seen this particular scuffing pattern on a number of No. 6 end-pieces. Has anyone else seen this? I can only deduce that it comes from the first link being repeatedly folded over the end-piece during storage. Any other ideas on how it happens?

I think the fold over is the only thing that makes sense. Maybe, maybe I could see some scuffing from people reaching into pockets of jeans or something? Over 20 years of use there’s bound to be something but I think metal on metal is more likely, especially since the markings are pretty straight up and down.
