New Speedy 1863 need help

Hi Everyone,

I could use some advice and help on a few issues with my new Speedmaster.

Since I got it in February, I have been winding it every night....even when I am not wearing it the next day. Is it perfectly acceptable to let the watch wind down and stop fo periods of time in between wearing?

Does winding after a certain time of night only have a negative effect on watches with a date complication or have I been hurting mine by winding after 9 or 11 PM?

Finally, I wound the watch a couple of nights ago and then decided to adjust the time a few minutes back counter clockwise.....huge mistake? Did I do any damage?

Thank you to any and all who will take the time to read this. Probably stupid questions but I thought this would definitely be the place to ask.

Regards,
Bobby

1. perfectly fine to let it wind down. Not keeping it running all the time will reduce wear slightly. I only wear my Speedmaster every couple of weeks, and it just sits in the box unwound until I need it.

2. you can wind your Speedmaster at any time you want without worry. The problem with the date complication (which your Speedmaster doesn’t have) is not about winding it near the time of the date change, it is seeking the hands at the time of the date change. That can cause the date wheel to bind and mess up the gears.

3. also perfectly fine to move the hands back CCW. You might observe the running seconds hand stop or move back a little, but this is not a big deal.

Generally you will want to avoid having the small seconds hand run backwards. If you adjust the time after fulling winding it, this will be less likely to occur.

Thank you Gentlemen, I really appreciate your responses. Incidentally, I did wind the watch fully and I did notice the small seconds hand run backwards....it was a relatively short wind just a matter of 10 minutes or so backwards. Did I do damage? Either way, it is definitely something I will not do again.

What a great resource this place is!

Cheers!

Avoid letting the hands run backwards (on their own) and as a matter of principle I avoid setting the date between 10 and 2 (ever since I broke a new JLC movement doing it)…. But apart from that, nothing you said is an issue.

These movements are robust. You can’t overwind them with significant force and you can’t activate the chronograph reset whilst running without significant force

enjoy your new watch!

nothing bad will happen if you wind minute hand back 10 or 30 minutes. Don’t fall into paranoia.

Thanks everyone. Immediately after doing this I swore I heard a faint knock at my door......could have sworn it was the Omega people coming to repossess. Turns out it was just my Bookie.

Enjoy your weekend folks!
