What do you think the final price will be?
Seems like a quite nice example compared to other exposed so far..

Very nice dial... I don't believe the second hand is the correct one. But I'm not a specialist

It looks like a nice one, and it sold for €7,162:
https://auctionet.com/en/2553002-universal-geneve-wristwatch-polarouter-steel-1950s.
The last one sold in November 2018 for 12,500 CHF = €12,652.38 at today's exchange:
https://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2018/important-watches-ge1804/lot.106.html.
That's a drop of almost half the value.
Another one sold in November 2019 for €2658, in less fine condition, but still, I think it is very nice:
https://auctionet.com/en/1171822-wrist-watch-universal-geneve-polarouter.
Any theories as to why the most recent sale price was so much lower than the one from 2018? I did not think the world economic situation would affect prices for serious collector watches like these. The speculative sports Rolex and Patek prices, sure, but isn't there a dedicated base of UG and specifically Polarouter collectors out there? I passed on this one for personal reasons, but I thought about it! Anyway, one never knows how high the winning bidder was willing to go 😉.
Did anyone here win the latest one?

There have actually been several others that have changed hands during this time, including at least five at auction that I am aware of. Examples that sold at Kaplans and Bukowskis in 2020 actually sold for considerably more than the watch at Sothebys.

Provenance is a very important factor with these watches. I think it probably adds greatly to the value if the watch is being sold by the family of the original owner with photos, SAS documentation, aeronautical paraphernalia etc.

Although this watch did not have that provenance as far as I'm aware, condition looked great and I agree that the hammer price seems reasonable relative to other auction results. I think timing was against it, not only the economic situation but also perhaps the time of year.

I think one other factor is supply and demand. As the interest in, and awareness of, these pieces has increased, owners and collectors have realised the value of the watches and more have come to market.

My opinion is its partly a realisation that 1) "theyre not as rare as we thought", and 2) theres not many who want to spend 5k or more on a time only UG. The old story was that they were only given to the crews of the first Polar flights, but it turns out that was only a handful, whereas the majority of them were handed out to other SAS employees over the years, and most of these ive found so far had nothing to do with the polar routes. There were just as many produced as any other 1st ex Polarouter (approx 170), and at 23 there have been more of this reference documented than any other Polarouter so far. Still, theyre a nice watch to collect, and in the grand scheme of things 170 is a very low production number.

Thanks for posting! Of course the burning question is, why the replacement broad arrow hands? Rare in their own right. Replaced during a UG service?
