Those who read the right websites already know that Omega already has the privately owned Omega Speedmaster chronographs used by astronauts Walter Schirra (Sigma 7 in Oct 1962) and Gordon Cooper (Faith 7 in May 1963) but also recently acquired an Omega Speedmaster CK2998 owned by Donald "Deke" Slayton, chief of the astronaut office...
What's lesser known is the fact that LtCdmr Walter "Wally" Schirra used his personal Speedy CK2998-5 during water egress training in May 1962... not scared at all as some recent forum-members asking about the waterproof aspect of their Omega Speedmaster 馃榿
So far we've only seen Speedmaster chronographs being worn during water egress by the Apollo 16 crew in 1971...

Thanks ... there's more to come as we'll try to bring rarely seen images of NASA astronauts ( & cosmonauts ) at important dates.
It's obvious that Schirra already wore his personal Omega Speedmaster CK2998-4 during training as backup pilot for the Aurora 7 mission assigned to Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter... We scan original old NASA photographs !
We're certainly looking forward to the NASA Speedmaster complete website update by the Omega Museum / NASM / NASA cooperation team...
This week SpeedyTuesday = 3rd October = exactly 55 years First Omega In Space

Some years ago NASA started to use Flickr... Here's an example of their 1963 MA-9 Faith 7 photo collection.

Question: But where are all the good Speedmaster photos ?
Answer: In private collections and NASA started to cooperate with private collectors to update their own digital collection

Here's yet another never-shown-on-interwebs MA-9 Faith 7 photo clearly showing the wristwatches of Mercury astronaut Leroy Cooper

We'll probably have to wait until 2019 but I would like to know the exact numbers of Speedmaster chronographs delivered to NASA:
1964 = 4
1965 = 17
1966 = ?
1967 = ?
1968 = ? (still received 105.003 models)
1978 = 56 ( # radial dial... # other... 12 quartz ? )
1990 = ?
1998 = ? ( 27 X-33 ? )

Some Omega forum-members are motivated spaceflight aficionados who have their own listing of " NASA Flown " Speedmaster chronographs...
But how good will their listings line up with the extensive work by the Omega-NASM-NASA team ?

Wonder if anyone can help me, I read a long time ago that a major reason why they wanted astronauts to have watches in space was that it was used as a back up timer in emergencies. One of the stories that was told was during early testing, while in orbit the module spun out of control and the astronaut at the time used a watch or something to get out of the jam. But now searching for it, I cant find that story again, I'd like to know who the astronaut was, what mission it was etc. Additionally, I'd like to find official statements or sources (astronauts or nasa officials) regarding this story. Specifically as it relates to how it lead NASA to look into watches and sending out the request to watch companies.

This post has been extremely informative. Thanks.
