Hi, I’m a novice in the world of vintage watches and Omega so hoping for some guidance.
I purchased a 1998 Speedmaster for my husband years ago through a dealer and I’ve always been a bit jealous of it! So this Seamaster was a spontaneous purchase at auction and I’m hoping it’s genuine and in OK condition.

Details provided by auction house were:

AN OMEGA SEAMASTER AUTOMATIC WRISTWATCH; matte dial, applied markers, center seconds, date, 24 jewel cal. 562 movement, gold plated, c. 1961

I’m not game to open up caseback. But I have a good fine watch repairer I can go to for any repairs. The caseback itself seems odd / missing a part..? The black material is like a rough stone. 09394AF4-02F3-4517-9A48-2A401559471B.jpeg F9B2276E-B638-4D27-9DFE-C3B977E61997.jpeg 01CBBAA1-3DD0-41AD-8113-D7824FA68AF8.jpeg 495943BC-C753-48FC-A977-95A5FEA8FC87.jpeg

Nice looking classic watch - I’m sure you’ll enjoy wearing it.

You’re also spot on about getting it serviced sooner rather than later.

    Welcome to OF

    Hi Hatstand and welcome here!

Your Seamaster looks legit as far as I can see. Seems like a reference number 14701.

You have some small issues (crown replaced, lume loss / degeneration, second hand seem to be a bit too short) but overall the watch seems in good conditon.

I can't comment on the black material but the caseback should look like that:

    Is the watch running properly?

If you intend to wear it regularly you should think about a service which could be necessary.

Depending on your location you could get some recommendations here on the forum.

    All the best!

    Thank you!

Yes it seems to be running well.

I’m in Sydney Aus - have taken another watch to Max Schweizer before and he seems very good.

That is a strange caseback. I would say aftermarket but maybe others know more. Anyway, nice looking watch that seems to have a fairly undamaged dial.

Yes it seems weird - not a huge issue for me as it wasn't expensive and I plan on wearing it and enjoying it - I'm not a collector... yet :) !
