My friend in LA walked in and was able to buy the 36mm yellow OP. YMMV

Reading about the disgraceful games and shenanigans of many ADs makes me think I will never have the chance to buy a new Rolex from an AD again (and no, I don't buy used and will not pay the scandalous gray market prices!), like I did in 1996 when I bought my Sub 14060...just walked into an AD and bought it! I´m not a "privileged" person and have no purchase history. I´m just an ordinary guy who loves Rolexes and would like to buy a new one to wear as it was made to be, and not flip it. All the nonsense and absurd hype has only become much worse since the recent 2020 releases, and I´m just glad to have my old Sub! And don't get me started on the "interviews" that many ADs are now requiring, to see if you're a "suitable" person! Well, screw them. And as many have said, there are lots of other great watches out there. But it´s a crying shame...

After todays experience I would never buy a new rolex. One manager asked me where I lived and when I told him I was not local he said if I left my details it would probably be over 5 years before he called me. The way they talk about rolex watches you would think they had a cure to coronavirus. Its only a watch and you don't need it lol

I have heard this more and more, "we only sell local". I just tell them, "i live right here, behind the market." or some BS. bc i know they BSing me. Policies given to ADs at Rolex have changed over the years. Some stores stick by their policies, some will bend a bit for their existing customers. Here are a list of changes I've heard in the last few years.

"Cannot ship to another territory."
"No discounting."
"No discounting on precious metals."
"Every stainless sports needs director/manager approval."
"Customer must live nearby."
"Watch must leave store with no stickers or packaging."
"We have to keep the warranty cards."
"Watch must have engraved caseback"
"We have to size it to you right now, and keep the links"

I know I will never get a new sub or gmt but thought an entry level OP that looks a bit different I might be in with a chance but now I know I will never get one and I refuse to pay above retail for a new watch as I’d rather by used, vintage or new from another company. I think the breitling Outerknown or Superocean with bright yellow dial will be just as good.

I own nine Rolexes but never bought one new. Closest I came was 1982, when an AD showed me a Daytona, white with black subdials, for around $1,200. If they’d had a black with white subdials, I would have bought it, even though it would have taken months to pay it off.

I still kick myself today.

I hate going into ADs of almost any high end brand. It’s worse than new car dealerships. And, most of the staff don’t know shit about what they’re selling.

Edit: Thinking about it, I realized I’ve never bought a new watch in a store. I’ve bought a few online and from grey marketeers over the phone, but I’ve never bought a new watch, over the counter, at a store.

Things are getting “weird” with Rolex AD’s. When the new DJ 36mm, 126234, was introduced last year at Baselworld, I ordered one in early June just as they were beginning to hit the stores. A month later I got it. A friend of mine went into the same AD over 6 months ago and asked for the same watch and they told her that she couldn’t even come on the waiting list as it was closed. A simple stainless steel DJ 😕

I also saw an e-mail from the same AD to a customer, who has bought several watches from them, saying that the expected waiting time for the new Submariner is 7-10 years.

I actually think the new yellow dialled version is pretty cool but 41mm is almost certainly too big for me as the OP wears a bit bigger IMO.

Have you considered contacting reputable second hand dealers, the grey market, for the watch?
And if you think dealing with Rolex ADs is bad, try a Rolex service center sometimes. Attitude with a capital "A".

I'm with you... I've bought one Rolex from an AD, all the others I have purchased from private sellers or the grey market. You could have bought Apple stock with the $1,200.00 too. Don't kick to hard... who knew??

Ive seen some online and they are just too expensive. My friend owns a jeweller and he knows all the people in the trade as he sells used rolexes and he says the current situation is so bad as the prices are so high that its not worth spending 20 grand on a watch that you might make £500 on. He offered me a used rolex explorer ii a few years ago for under £4500 and a hulk for £13,000 and look at the prices now

I quite like the look of the new Breitlings (at least you can actually buy them!) but they´re a bit too big for me! I live in Germany and have been looking at two German brands that, while they may not be so well-known, have a very high reputation...Damasko and Archimede. Both make extremely tough watches (which I need as I´m clumsy!) that would be worthy companions to my old Sub, and you don't need a cart full of cash to buy one of them!

I checked a few of my sources, and you're right, but, if you aren't set on getting a new model, I know you can find an older version in a smaller case for under 5,000 USD and I know your friend should be able to find a better price for you. Only if you are willing...

1970, 1973 OP ref 1601 SS/Gold Bezel 36mm $4,650 - 4350 USD from a dealer in USA

The recent breitlings look GREAT and for sure they can be had with some discounts too. This green one looks better with a bracelet on I think.

I’ve never heard of them but I will look as always interested in learning about new watch brands

I’ve owned several vintage Rolexes and use to only buy vintage watches but my tastes have changed and like new watches now but have never owned a new Rolex and don’t think I ever will

Chef40... you never know what the future may bring, keep thinking about that new Rolex, don't ever say never. As for myself, I still prefer vintage Rolex watches to the new models... something to do about the patina and the hour markers

I had the chance to try the yellow one in 41. It was sold already. Still unsure about the size. Maybe 36mm fits better?
