New Omega Speedmaster Hesalite vs Sapphire: Key Differences Explained

This thread compares the new Omega Speedmaster Hesalite and Sapphire models, focusing on case height, logo, crystal feel, caseback and buying trade-offs. If you are choosing between the two, this gives the core differences fast.

There are a few main differences between the two.
Here's my short list.

1. Height
Hesalite - 13.58mm
Sapphire - 13.18mm

2. Applied Logo
Sapphire is an homage to older (pre-moon) Speedys with the applied Omega logo.
Hesalite - Print Logo
Sapphire - Applied Logo
I can see reasons for not having this on the Hesalite version. Not having the applied logo of the Hesalite gives people a modern speedy and proper copy.

3. Bracelet Polished Links vs Satin
Hesalite - Satin
Sapphire - Polish
This is simply preference in my opinion.

4. Exhibition Caseback
Hesalite - Solid
Sapphire - Exhibition

Of course the main difference is the crystal itself.

I did this short list to give others the same info. It's a difficult decision for me as like most of you, I've been looking at these non-stopped for the past 24hrs.
1. The height is a huge + for the Sapphire
2. The applied logo is more attractive to me especially given the price point.
3. I'm leaning toward the Satin but the polish is a nice flashy touch.
4. Solid is always my preference.

All of this said, I think for the first time I want the sapphire version. The 1 & 2 are important to me and I also want my watch at that price to have a piece of sapphire. I don't want to polish my new speedy after I scratch my crystal.

Main differences:
  • Crystal and display back
  • Logo style and overall look
  • Case proportions
  • Heritage feel versus modern convenience

The height is a huge + for the Sapphire

But isn't the height the result of the 'dome' of the hesalite, which hesalite dome is both (1) exactly the attraction for some, and (2) not really additional 'height' on one view?

Now it's 6. 😉

I went sapphire. I like shiny to stay shiny.

Same. The bracelets usually have a little bit of polish.

Took a look and didn't see any other post going through the differences.

Having bought the hesalite two months ago I'd go for the new sapphire too😁

I don’t think that there is a thread specifically about the new watch 3861 Speedmaster, but many about the one it replaces.

With that said, I can see your point that with the new changes and differences introduced in the new one, some people may have change their opinion on which one to get, or maybe they already own one and would go for the other option to justify adding another one to their collection.

I am really contemplating the sapphire for the new release where I used to be team hesalite. Since this one isn’t necessarily the exact watch that went to the space, why not get the best version of it and get to stare the new movement once in a while.

Agreed, you aren't alone and plenty other are going to feel the same way.

You know who else knew about it 😉

Despite "milky ring" on sapphire, that's the one I'd choose: polished details on bracelet, applied logo, display caseback.

Is there definitely a milky ring on the new one.

Am loving the travel box - what a great idea! Hesalite for me. Have always been very slightly annoyed by the milky ring.

Me too but with that window to the movement and the applied logo, I think I made my choice.

The more I look at the 2, the more I see the overall differences. They do look different from on another and I think it will be more apparent in person.
