I've been eyeing the speedmaster as an everyday watch and as I learn more about them I've really grown to like the look of the models that lack the crown guard.

That leaves me with a couple options as I see it - get a new 50th anniversary Moonwatch or a vintage one. I can get a pretty good price on the new Moonwatch (around $3,800 for this model 311.32.40.30.01.001) - and then for a vintage piece, seems like the moon is the limit (and I'd have to trust that I'm really getting a quality piece).

Part of me thinks I'll regret not buying a cool vintage one, but the last thing I want is something unreliable with second hand parts that I've massively overpaid for.

So, how does one go about getting a solid vintage piece without spending a fortune - and is there any downside of just getting the new one (besides a bad case of envy)?

And is there any practical reason I should reconsider getting one of the models that does have a crown guard?

    Thanks!

You'd have no problems from any of us for buying a modern reissue for a daily driver. Lots of members have the new FOIS.

now that is a good price. The 3570.50 retail is $4400 I believe.
