Hello. I'm very new to the forum and wanting to get my first luxury watch. What do you guys think about this watch. No pics of the back cover off and movement video. No papers. Just a box. He supposedly bought it this way. Said it had been surviced prior to him buying it. Any help is much appreciated for this new watch collector. Thanks

box is modern and not related to the watch.

Watch looks great but all depends on price. The Cosmics don't sell for much.

Well, that dial looks quite dubious to say the least...
Certainly at that resolution. A better shot would really help assess it.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm gonna ask him if I can get a better pic of the dial. I got him down to around 600 usd. Is that good price for a first luxury watch?

Redial, and a bad one at that. Huge lume dots. $600 might not be terrible if the watch was original. Run Forrest Run!!!!!!!!!!!!

And they've printed the cross-hairs right over the 6, 9 and twelve markers. 😲

What would be a good first luxury watch preferably an Omega in the 500-1000 dollar price range that I can be rest assured that it's legit original? Or there isn't one in this price range and i gotta put up another 1000 dollars.

That is a good range for budget. There are heaps of over priced junk out there but if you are patient, you will find a decent watch in the private sales section of this forum. The watches here will be legit. Late 60's to early 70's manual wind Geneves will be at the lower end and manual wind or auto wind Seamasters from the 1960's at the upper limit. Just wait and watch.

The first step is that you have to figure what style of watch that you're interested in. There are plenty of nice omegas below $1000 and a few nice models that can still be had below $500. Here are some photos of Cosmics that I sold over the past few months. They're still budget friendly and you get a lot of bang for your buck. Similarly to the Omega Dynamics, these come in some fun, but more formal dial styles. All except the Turler dialed one sold at or below $500USD. If you're interested in a Cosmic, feel free to DM me as I've been trying to form a small collection of different dial styles and I've been selling the ones that I don't end up keeping.

Alternatively, look up these references:
- Seamaster De Ville Ref 166.020 (these are really popular and getting pricey)
- Seamaster Ref 166.010 (very popular design on Beads of Rice bracelet)
- Seamaster Cosmic Ref. 166.026 (Date Automatic variant as below)
- "Jumbo" Seamaster Ref 166.028 (this was my first vintage omega buy and I think these look very modern)
- Dynamic Ref. 166.039 (a little "odd" and "retro" but very fun in my opinion)

Obviously, there are plenty of nice options in your range, but these are just some of my personal recommendations to get you thinking about what you like and don't. Additionally, I have a bias toward automatics with date functions from the 60's and my recommendations reflect this.

Stick around and keep an eye on the private listings. Cosmics always seem to pop up here at great prices. @Toishome has sold a number of them well below 600 USD. It's a matter of being patient 👍

The advice here is spot on and I’m glad you got the better photo of the dial. I do think Cosmics are worth pursuing if you like the style, as they are definitely really good value for what you can currently get them.

You’ve got a good enough budget, finding the right one for you might take time, but you’ll get there. And well done for posting here BEFORE you buy!

This Cosmic was one of my first also. It has since moved on. Kind of miss it now that I see it again.

^ this. 100%
Occasionally some decent ones pop up on Ebay, but you have to careful since many of them have the dials refinished for that era/model. $450-$600 USD is a fairly common price range to find them in original condition on a leather strap. Might have to add another $150-$200 to find one on a steel bracelet. I got my 166.026 for $500 and then spent another $250 tracking down the proper endlinks and bracelet that were original/offered on that ref #.
