I finally made the jump to a Macbook from a PC laptop. Got it yesterday and so far I really like it. It will probably take me a while to get up to speed with it and I still need to transfer files, etc.
    Looking forward to it though.

We actually have a very high proportion of mac users on this site, OSX+iOS account for nearly as much as Windows

I'll have to keep the photo editing in mind since my watch photo skills could use some help. Actually I just need to take the time to finish a light box and apply a little effort.

I have a 10-year old desk-top with a tiny Sony Trinitron Multiscan E230 monitor. I am very happy with it. Give to me a Mac, very likely I am not able to use it.

I am using the Lubuntu system and I really do not know what it is. My son who installed it told me it is 'virus-resistant'. True, all these years my machine has not had any problems with a virus attack. Does any one know what this system is all about.

I have asked a friend to install for me a program for editing pictures and also, I want to download some videos from youtube but he is unable to do it for me. Is there any chance any of the computer experts in this forum, who can advise me, what to do? With the advice, I can ask my friend to install the necessary programs.

    Thank-you.

Au contraire, respectable membre Seamonster! Macs are easy for everyone to use regardless of their computer literacy level. Look at me - I'm a moron and it took me no time at all to adapt. :p

I reckon the best advice is to forget everything pc, I switched about three years ago and so many doom and gloom merchants predicted armagedon - tosh.
I don't have to endure endless upgrades, no av software and the continual upgrades they require. Plenty of quality software available free, for business I use open office which works brilliantly.
Today a neighbour asked for some assistance with her pc. all sorted but how I had forgotten the dark side ::yawn::

I just installed open office on the mac because that's what I used on my pc as well. (screw Microsoft office)

Do you guys have a particular antivirus software that you like for the Mac?

My wife is finally ready to switch over from the dark side, after the failure of her 3rd laptop in 6 years & endless software and anti-virus problems - during which time my MacBook has ploughed on regardless without a single issue. Only thing is, we have no idea if a MacBook Pro or Air is most suitable. (I have an iPad through work & she has ruled one out as she prefers a physical keyboard).

The main use will be the usual household stuff: web browsing, forums, email, family photos & clips & occasional word processing. I suppose a well equipped 13in Pro will be fine for years to come. Any thoughts from the gang ?

Never bother with one and never had a problem, the majority opinion is that they are not required although there are plenty available.

A 13" MB Pro is what I just bought. If you dont need an optical drive or a huge amount of hard drive space, then a MB Air should be perfect.

You may not know, it took me some while, to learn how to use the mouse.

My son has just bought the Mac and OMG, for such an expensive machine, there is no mouse. It will take me ages to use it, since I have to learn all over again on how to use a mouse-less machine. The keyboard button has no depth, too, unlike the keyboard that I have.

What I have now will last me, for many years more. Whether or not I will last that long, I do not know.

    Thank-you.

Windy LOVES her MacBook Air (Forgot to mention that we had one because it's her computer - the rest are ours. ::shy:: I'll go add it to the list.). It's too small for most men to operate unless you've got pigmy hands. She didn't like lugging the MacBook Pro around because of the weight. As mentioned, the only thing missing is the DVD / CD drive which isn't a huge handicap.
