New Acquistion: Technos Sky Light (Poor Man's Constellation)

There's a lot to like about this one, imho:
the pie-pan dial, the dauphine hands, the steel furniture w/onyx inserts, the all-steel case w/angled lugs, hexagonal case-back with medallion . . . and it even has the original mineral-glass crystal! Inside is a Technos-signed ETA 2522, which is keeping excellent time. Now don't get me wrong, I love my Connies, but this was 1/10th the price and it seems well more than 1/10th the watch!

Not sure how the pecking order works for lookalikes, i guess mine would be a poor mans Technos skylight.
I have not given it the PIE-PAN name, more of a " Yorkshire Pudding Tin " dial 😉

Wittnauers are a bigger name than Technos, to be certain, so a bit of a push. Congrats on introducing a new descriptive phrase, "Yorkshire Pudding Tin Dial" (YPTD).

I think they are great watches and a really good value. They show up on eBay all the time. The bracelet they have is also fantastic. One thing that is interesting is that while they look like a pie pan dial they aren’t really one.

Here is a pic of mine and I am keeping any eye out for a black dial version.

It’s well worth trying to find an original Technos mesh bracelet. Very comfortable fit and no hair pulling.

Good to see yours has the medallion in the back. Many examples are missing theirs.

Beautiful watches. Based on a quick search these seem to come up for sale mainly in non-EU countries. I guess that's a blessing and a curse.

Mine came from Japan which is where I usually see them for sale on the bay.

Japan must have a big market for Technos back in the day, they are pretty well known here.
Skylights are quite commonly seen here and must have sold bucket loads here in the early 70's. Most of their other offerings leave me cold, to be honest, but this one hits the sweet spot.

Agreed on the mesh bracelet, a fairly integral part of the charm of these watches.

True, but with inflation that equates to about $900 in today's money, certainly not cheap back then.

I have them as well. They are excellent and very well made. A LOT of watch for the money. However the original bracelets can be quite tricky while wearing. The clasp often doesn’t close firmly enough to keep it from sliding off your wrist. It can’t hurt to check that.

I hardly wear them though… But now that I see them again I don’t know why🥰

Roughly half the price of a comparable Longines. From the same 1972 catalog:

See #4 and #5 above. Within a few years, the ETA movements used by Technos would find their way into Longines and Omega watches.

It’s actually not black, but in between dark grey and brown. It’s a really interesting dial with so many details.

I really like the Sky Light, really good value for money. For us ladies (especially since Omega sadly didn't make a pie pan in a ladies size to my knowledge) there's also the Sky Lady - I've had two, and this one packs an ETA 2671 which has quick set date and hacking seconds which is pretty rare in vintage ladies watches. If you're e-shopping in Japan, pick one up for your ladies for pennies while you're at it!

Here is my dark dial Sky Light. Very comfortable to wear. Unfortunately mine is running super fast, like a minute fast every five. Debating whether the service cost is worth it as it’s pretty expensive for my local guys.

These are super fun. 2 of mine need servicing but I probably won't do it - I don't wear them enough to pay up, but I like them too much to unload them. 🙃

I’ve had my Skylight for a few years. It had a broken date wheel, so the hands would stop right at date changing time. Finally got it fixed, serviced and a hand upgrade. Kept the originals.
