Thanks very much for the update... Since Buzz's has been stolen/lost, it's the only remaining piece which was on the moon...

Not even close. In fact there is also a Bulova that was worn on the moon.

@snake.doctor most likely about 11 watches where worn on the moon 10 Speedmasters and 1 Bulova. 12 people walked on the moon and it is documented that Buzz's did not leave the lander. Many more went around the moon including a documented 861 in a later mission as part of an experiment.

This probably would have been the better first response to @snake.doctor No everyone here is as well versed on some of these topics as others are.

Also, it was Armstrong's watch that didn’t leave the lander not Buzz’s. Again, we all make mistakes.

Ever considered I was talking about Apollo 11 only and not all the other missions?

So before facepalming someone, maybe try to slap yourself first.

Buzz' Speedmaster ? Cerca Trova 😗

Hiding in plain sight??? …. it will be a treasure trova for someone if it ever turns up :0)
A watch worn during what is arguably one of the most significant events in the history of Mankind.

*note not worn on moon.
A bit harsh. I like the back story and the fact it comes up in the mission transcript. Also it was exposed to the lunar atmosphere, and plenty of moon dust. I would still be happy to have it in my collection :0)

Sorry for the delay but here it is. I received this image yesterday evening but wanted to confirm it was authorized to share since it did not appear in the original collectSPACE article. I also wanted confirmation from another source what type of restoration, if any, had been done to Armstrong's Speedmaster.

Here the additional unreleased image of the Armstrong Speedmaster from the NASM (Smithsonian 2019) via collectSPACE. Thank you to cS for allowing me to share it here first.

The watch is all original and has only had a restorative cleaning. It was disassemble and cleaned and all parts are original to the watch as it was received from Armstrong by the NASM in 1973.

Here is an enlarged image of the watch where you can see the Serial Number #46 engraved on the lower left lug.

One interesting observation I made is the evidence of the restoration by the orientation of the scratches on the unpolished crystal. The large scratch you see from the center of the dial to the 5 hour marker is oriented differently from how the crystal was set in the watch at the time of delivery in 1973. If you look at the original images of the Armstrong watch here taken in 1973 you can see the same large scratch running from the center to the 3 hour marker.

I hope you enjoy the new image of this fantastic piece of history.
@TLIGuy, thank you for this awesome post!!

Here is something I ran across today while looking back at the history of Armstrong's watch.

It is well documented that Armstrong left his watch in the LEM during the EVA as a back-up to the mission timer if needed. He discusses this in his oral history. Today I was looking for transcripts between Armstrong and Aldrin to see if I could find the conversation between the two discussing the watch and ran across this brief conversation between Armstrong and Aldrin prior to the landing.

Question - Was Armstrong even wearing his watch during the landing? Maybe not.

Here is the transcript between Armstrong and Aldrin 56 minutes prior to the landing and it appears Armstrong's watch was in his pocket.

Are you sure, that sounds like a Cheech and Chong LP I have?

“It” could be the stopwatch?

I don't believe so. In many publications and transcripts "watch and stopwatch" are used interchangeably. Only one traditional stopwatch has been documented and used during the Apollo 11 mission and it was used by mission controllers to time the decent burn found here.

EDIT -

No other timing devices are listed in the Apollo 11 Crew Storage List here. Only 3 chronograph watches are listed (1 per crew member) noted on page 22 upon entering the command module. Also interesting in the document you can see how only 2 watches (Armstrong and Aldrin) transfer from the CM to the LM prior to landing and then 2 return from the LM back into the CM after re-docking.

@Shankified / @TLIGuy I looked into this before (for a different project) and there is another timer device (like a kitchen egg timer but 2-speed). I did not find it from the kit list but it is on there if you know about it = Page 4 SEB 331001104-201 Apollo 11 Crew Storage List here.
2 speed interval timer (6min or 60min) + alarm. It shows how important measuring time was and that compared to today they were using rudimentary equipment. https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/interval-timer-apollo-11

Great to know that it is on display it looks to be in amazing condition given its age and the adventure it was involved in.

Thanks for posting
