Hi, I'm new here and need help to identify a 50's (?) automatic watch that my father gave me some 30 yrs ago. I usually don't wear watches since they get scuffed and dinged and I did not want my father's damaged; so never worn outside. It does have minor wear since he got it some many years back. It was last serviced in the late 90's but still keeps accurate time. I could not find any watches on Ebay that is similar and I hope someone here could help identify the model. Pics are bad, sorry but my digital camera is almost 20 yrs old and can't take close-ups at all. It is: -automatic -has diamond shapes for numbers. It is not the thin long ones but more short. -double diamond shape for 12 -front gold plated? -back is steel with seahorse emblem. That's it any help would be appreciated.
Welcome - while we'd usually be happy to help, it's kinda hard with pictures that really don't show anything but a gold-white blur. I can tell you it's likely from the late fifties, as that's when the large hippocampus casebacks were used, and it's definitely gold-capped (a layer of gold instead of solid precious metal). We'll need a clear picture from the front, and ideally one of the movement/inside of the caseback, as the latter is the place where you'd find the model reference number. Don't try to open it yourself if you don't know how, but any watchmaker in your area can easily do that for you. Also: Modern phones are pretty amazing. If you know anybody with a smartphone, chances are their camera is much more capable of producing a picture that's useful.

It's a late 1950s gold-capped Seamaster. The reference number and serial number will be inside, but you will need a professional to open this type of case.
Me neither, and also very much on the thick side. But a better picture will tell. Oh, and @GWL treat it to a new strap that fits its size, 18mm instead of 11/16in
