Hello folks. My Mom just found an old watch that was given to my Dad for his "... years' service with the company". My Dad passed away almost two years ago and neither my Mom nor I do remember when he received it. Anyway, here's some pictures of the watch. Well, the watch is too small for me to wear it and I just don't want to put it in a drawer. So I was thinking about turning it into some kind of desk clock. But I just don't have any idea how to do it. Is there maybe some kind of "watch rack" or "watch hanger" I could use? Of course, it should remain as it is. So no screws, no glue... Thanks a lot for your input, folks. Thomas
I kinda just thought of this now, I'm sure it's been done before. But what about a nice stained block of wood that you have the shape of the watch cut out of. And then you can fit it in the block like a puzzle piece. Then it will be easy to remove as needed.
Condolences on the loss of your father. There are small desk clocks made from wristwatches - they look like this: https://omegaforums.net/threads/stowa-desk-clock-24-hour-sale.47112/ Maybe you could make or have something made to house the watch. It would be kinda cool to have the caseback on the front too, so you could see the engraving that was dedicated to your dad.
Dornbluth & Sohn makes a box specific for their watches, but I think you could have something made to look similar. There is not mention of the box on the Dornbluth site, but there is a link below that will give you an idea. http://forums.timezone.com/index.php?t=tree&goto=4419322&rid=0
Thanks a lot, folks, for all your input. Giving it kind of a new housing is quite a nice idea. I didn't think of that. I will probably let a local watchmaker have a look at it as it does not work right now. I don't even know if it's a quarz or manual wind. The case is quite thin. Best regards Thomas
This just turned up in one of my saved eBay searches. I think it looks quite stylish but subtle and shouldn't draw attention away from the watch itself. http://www.ebay.com/itm/F-S-Wrist-W...079055?hash=item2ef6db8c4f:g:dyQAAOSwq7JUCbh4Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network May be a cheap(er) way to start. (US$69.75 + showing as free shipping for me in Australia) Not too sure how well it would work with a leather strap/band, but should be ok. Or you could pick yourself a bracelet. Should be easy to remove to admire/show off the caseback inscription.
These are, quite literally, cheap as dirt. You can get nicer velvet ones as well. Just check Amazon. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Oops...I am German and Google translator doesn't come up with a translation for "stirrup" that makes sense in this particular case Would you mind....? Cheers Thomas
@Emeister That's kind of what I was looking for. Hefty price but worth looking at it. @Egatdagi I know these watch holders. But I was actually looking for something more decent But thanks anyway Cheers Thomas
Hello folks. I found a piece of cherry wood at a local Christmas fair. It was reasonable priced so I just thought I'd give it a try. Here's the outcome. I used double-sided tape to hold the watch. Cheers Thomas
On the off chance anyone stumbles onto this thread and wonders how to get something like the block of wood above, try searching eBay for “medal stand” or “blank trophy stand” etc. Not the same but would work in a similar way. Cheers to the original poster for the idea.
