I think you are looking at this rather linearly and taking the long route by thinking new Rolex vs new GS/BP. A late 5 digit or early 6 digit sub can be had for the same money as the GS/BP, the used Rolex market has hit the pond hard and is mid skip so there are some good values to be had, particularly on neo-vintage (90’s-00’s) more common models like submariners in the <$9k range. Plus that era of submariner will be much closer on fit and finish to the ‘68 your father had than any of maxi-cased bloated pork pies on the market now.

People on these forums are so simple minded . That’s brain cell power

Who's the more foolish, the fool, or the fool who goes to a big group of fools to ask for advice?

I think I kinda get what he is saying.
He might have to wait a while to get that Rolex.
So while he is waiting, why not get something that is kinda meh but nice enough to pass the time (no pun).

Been there. Don't do it unless you actually want it or if you're okay with the hit you will take selling forward.

p.s. I'd personally take either of the aforementioned watches over a Rolex. 😀

You don’t have to ! It’s not a Seiko it’s a Grand Seiko

And an absolutely beautiful one, and I have complimented yours on a number of occasions. It's a way more attractive and unique watch than any Rolex. Why would you consider trading it if you feel the same way about it being better?

Just buy a Rolex. If you put your name on the waiting list you have plenty of time to save before they call you.

Better save quickly, at least according to Morgan Stanley:

The wait time for the popular Rolex Submariner was estimated to be 68 days in 2024 compared to 105 days in 2023.

Both watches are serious buys considering the price tags. Since you have stated that eventually you will end up trading up to a Rolex watch, If I were in your shoes, I would go for 36mm or 39mm Rolex Explorer which would satisfy the needs which those two watches would do together. My comment is not based on the brands of the watches you presented here as options, rather a holistic approach to the query itself. Good luck.

Surely if you trade for a Rolex, you'd be trading down!

Thats right! As the wise man once said:

You dont trade up to a pimp's watch.
You trade up to Sir Peter Blake's watch.
