This afternoon, over four hours before sunset, a bat hunting around the large trees in the churchyard. It's apparently more likely to see them in full daylight when they are thirsty or have a pup to feed, and we have had very little rain this year.

An unfortunate scorpion but the main character in this photo is the ant trying to pull it from the tail 😀

So a little friend has moved in under my back gate-stopping half house brick. I now also have to lift my bins as a cross check to make sure I do not run him/her over (good excercise). The cats are not interested. I think it is a toad?
We do not have a pond so I made a little paddling pool for it. It has taken to it like a duck to water (so to speak :0)
The ants like the bins.....and are less impressed with our new guest.

Well, it's toad season here, at least that's what we call it. It's the time of year when mowing the lawn slows down considerably, as we keep a keen eye out for the many small toads that tend to be running around the lawn at this time of year. So if they are close to the wooded areas on the property, I shoo them into the woods. But sometimes they are heading in the wrong direction, like this little guy:

Have to keep my eyes on the area directly in front of the mower at all times as I'm cutting, and as you can see they are not large at this stage, so only 1-2 cm long, so quite difficult to see, and mostly noticed through movement. So off the riding mower, pick them up, get my hand urinated on, and take them to safety. On a busy day I'll do this 10+ times before finishing up the cutting, but it's worth it. They help keep the mosquitoes in check!

This bright version of a common buzzard flew over my house the other day.
