Here's a cheap Mayo I had just trying different straps. Got 2 more leather ones coming in from yellow dog straps. I will post pics when they arrive.
The blue on this is prob a little light.

 

IMO, that NATO strap does not do justice to the watch

Maybe if you upgrade it to a higher quality Mayo...

 

I wouldn't want to offend anyone but IMO that NATO on the watch looks exactly as the OP describes it. Cheap.

 

Seriously, the 2998 is demeaned by pairing it with Miracle Whip or 365 Organic. Get some Duke's and call it a day.
But for real that nato is a little too informal / casual for the 2998. A blue leather or finely weaved nato would pair much better with the flashier elements.

I have 2 more arriving tomoz. Let's try them and see.
Maybe it will be one of those watches that only suits the original.

 

let me be the dissenter here. I like the strap. gives it that retro racing look.

 

How about trying a steel bracelet?

 

A darker blue would be perfect IMO.
Problem is you need to see it before purchasing...

What about the OEM Novonappa leather Nato ?
This color renders nice on the blue Titanium SM300

 

I always change to a striped NATO before I go to bed.

 

Matching the pyjama ?

 

I don't know why, but striped NATOs always look like pyjamas to me.

 

I don't know.. "The Boy in the Striped NATO" just doesn't sound as good as the original title.

 

I see the wife is modelling it on her arms again it must have been the styroids they used for uk womens shot put team. Poor lass.
