Speaking of Seiko, this is one that I've been considering for her:

That was going to be my recommendation. My GF went with the SNZG. It’s 42mm and lug to lug bigger then a SKX... she has tiny wrists that can’t clear normal straps when she wants to wear one of mine, but rocks it on Natos and works fine on her. It does not work on my 7.5 wrists.

1. tudor black bay 36mm - the explorer look, new, in your budget
2. pre owned rolex explorer 36mm - you get an all time classic that will hold the value over the years
3. pre owned or not omega aqua terra 38mm - sporty and dressy, a perfect watch for a "one watch person"
4. tudor black bay 58 - 39mm, if you want to go the diver way.

Squale City makes a perfect desk diver. 38mm by 11mm. I wear it mostly as a daytime dress watch, but perfectly good for active wear.

I just bought this for my fiance (DeVille, not my 300MC). Mens 39.5 mm, as she hates smaller ladies watches. Also means I can borrow if I need too.

Picked one up second hand for $1,800 aud, or about $1,300 USD on black leather.

With the choice of a leather strap, NATO or bracelet, suitable for just about any occasion. Can change it up with different NATOS too.

I've got her the NATO (above), a tan leather NATO, a brown leather NATO and a bracelet so far.

Well seeing that you’re looking for an affordable dive watch that is less than 39mm in size, I think the SKX 013 will be perfect.

38mm case size and 200m water resistant and around $250.

...the right way to do it if you want her to wear it is just take her out shopping to choose for herself and then you won’t have to worry.
Ding ding ding! This is correct! You could just bring her to some quality places and see if she likes anything or show her some of the threads.
I fully agree with the advice here.

I get great enjoyment out of my watches and I'd love to buy a nice one for my wife, but she has no interest in them. I have occasionally shown her what I thought were lovely vintage pieces and she has out-right hated them.

Growing up, I remember being taught the "Golden Rule: treat others as you would like to be treated". The problem is that people have very different preferences. I have recently heard what I think is a much better rule, and that is to "treat others as they would like to be treated".

...what all guys advise who have successfully purchased watches for their wife, the right way to do it if you want her to wear it is just take her out shopping to choose for herself and then you won’t have to worry.

Last night my wife said she needs a new watch, as her Women Timex watch is not keeping time. I offered her my vintage Ploprof. She immediately said, I hate that watch. I thought she would look sexy wearing the Ploprof.

Let her pick her own watch. Don't limit her to watches you want to borrow.

Not a likely candidate but speaking of a unisex and/or boys size watch this little Midland would have fit the bill in its day. I'm thinking of giving it to a lady friend after oiling and adjusting it for reliability.

Thin and light as a feather. Runs very nicely. Lume long dead of course.

That was a bold proposal, if there’s one watch I can’t imagine a woman wearing the ploprof is probably it.

Well it just happened to be the watch I was wearing at the time she stated she needed a new watch. Truth is she hates the modern ploprof (I'm not sure she realizes I also have the vintage, that is the one I offered up) as I do wear a watch while I sleep and a couple of times I have knocked while sleeping, of course accidentally. Each time it was the modern ploprof, so now it is the hated watch. BTW I no longer wear that one while sleeping.

You wore that thing while sleeping? 😲
Not surprised she would hate it.
