My watch actually was noticed

I had to go into the hospital for a same-day outpatient procedure in the interventional radiology department yesterday. The physician came out of the OR to discuss the procedure with me and answer any additional questions I had while it was being cleaned and prepped from a previous patient's procedure. We were finishing up, I was commended for my knowledge of the procedure and good questions and then he said, "I like your watch. Is that a Seamaster?" I said yes, apologized for bringing a watch as the pre-op instructions said no watches or jewelry, he said it's fine and no problem.

I started blathering on about how it was from 2004, it's thinner than the newer ones because it doesn't have the in-house movement but I don't care because it looks great and wears even better than the newer models. He asked if had an ETA movement, which I confirmed then mentioned that Omega plates it and gussies it up a bit, calling it an 1120. With that exchange, we began talking watches for about five minutes. We talked about how the Seamaster was a fine watch and comparable to the Submariner and that the current Rolex watches are certainly well-built and finished beautifully but they've strayed from what got them here. He said that he would love to see a Grand Seiko in person.

We finally realized, hey, we better get to it. Pretty cool and made my day a little better.

Thank you, all. It's really been many long years and the results of this procedure will sort of prove the end of a chronic condition that really has no other end point. I'm not ecstatic but am glad in a certain way. Being upset or angry about it will not get me far down the road so I'm being as positive as I can, engaging with the doctors and nurses, and listening to what they say.

That is cool!! Every so often I have an interaction like that and it always brightens my day. Not too many people in my area that appreciate fine watches.

I've had only one guy notice my watch. It was embarrassing. "A gift from America? ".
"Yeah", I lied.
I hope I can just continue to enjoy privately. Not even my family knows what I paid.

I prefer my watches are not noticed and I never talk prices.

This is a nice SM with sword hands…
Wish it wasn’t discontinued….

Maybe Omega will do a throwback model in the future. If they do, I just hope they don't mess it up even though it doesn't need be a direct copy. It's a simple design that works.

very well written, are you sometimes not a writer?

I'm generally a technical writer but am often pressed into having to write persuasively to convince others or management of the technical requirements for systems and equipment I'm responsible for.

It’s always fun to get into a watch conversation, so long as it’s not “ I’ve got a gun, hand it over.”

Has to make you feel better to know your Dr is detail oriented...at least up until you get twice the amount of anesthesia needed and your watch mysteriously disappears! ;-)

I wore my orange bezel Planet Ocean 2500 to a colonoscopy several years ago. I knew you were not supposed to, but after I bought it in 2010, I clamped the damned thing on my wrist and never took it off for nine straight years.

Anyway, the gastroenterologist was extremely interested in it, asking me all about the watch and it’s depth rating right up until the point where the anesthesia took effect and I went bye-bye. When I woke up, my watch was on backwards! The crazy bastard must have taken it off and looked at it while I was under sedation. Apparently confused by the HEV valve, he put it back on my wrist upside down.

After, when he came out to talk to my wife, he told her everything went fine with the procedure and then started talking about my watch again! And to top it off, hand written across the top of the post-procedure report was, and I kid you not:

Good prep
No polyps
Nice watch

I thought it was really funny. My wife thought it was very odd.

An orange bezel PO is a nice looker to anyone. It's probably a ray of sunshine for anyone who looks for polyps all day.

I've had my Omega for about 4.5 months now. Not a single person has noticed or complimented it which is fine by me.

Maybe one exception, a few days ago when I was at Panera Bread an older gentlemen glanced at my wrist, then at his (I could tell it was a quality watch but didn't recognize it specifically, maybe IWC crono of some type), then glanced at his wife. She gave him a mean look that I think said, "Don't you dare go talk to that stranger about watches." He didn't move a muscle.

Awesome! I've seen that look on my wife's face.

Great story, thanks for sharing .
