Well, the dealer probably matched the wrong hang tag with your watch when it was sold to you. The serial should also be on the service invoices, most watchmakers include that.

I wouldn’t say it worrisome, I’d be a lot more worried if the dial was miss matched.

Great lesson here, never assume when you can check something first-hand. 👍 Watch looks all correct as Alex mentioned, but the paperwork doesn't match, which is unfortunate.

As the serial is ok for a -74 then all is ok, and not a bitsa.

This is all very interesting as have never asked for opinions on it and always regarded it as a straightforward purchase. I appreciate all the comments. Thanks.

Just for reference, here is what a full set from the hang tag serial number range should look like.
I would expect to see the same set from the OP's watch.
The moon crater box has already been phased out by this point, but again back then no-one really cared and the AD could have just grabbed whatever 'Speedmaster' box they had laying around in the back...

@Spiggy have you ever had the watch serviced?
Hands look like service parts (at least in these pictures). A better close up (non-shaky) pic of the hands not stacked on top of each other would help.

Yes used to have it serviced annually by omega and last service in 2009 by omega jewellers. [ATTAC H]1302752[/ATTACH]

Hands are service parts. Not correct for this reference.

Interesting I've been ripped off then.
The watch serial number is 32199893 which differs to the number on the paperwork 31009029. A mk2 speedmaster was sold to my friend at the same time and im thinking the numbers might have got mixed up as there would be no reason to put the wrong number on intentionally. Bit of a mystery and after all these years this comes to light. The watch has had a secret life! Thanks for your input.

No, they are a service replacement done in one of your routine services. Happens all the time, not a big deal functionally but does impact it’s value to a collector.

No idea why they might have been changed as they always looked the same. Well its what it is and could speculate all day but nothing changes. Just one more question. Is ebay the best way sell a package like this or would a specialised auction be way to go. I'm not ready to sell it just yet but would welcome unbiased opinion.

eBay gets a bad rap here, but IMO eBay would be fine, especially if it's in your comfort zone. I sold a couple of vintage Speedmasters earlier this year. I listed them both here on OF and on eBay, and I did better on eBay even with the fees. Everything went smoothly. Of course, I've sold a number of watches on eBay over the years, so I was already comfortable with it.

You might want to consider selling the box separately, especially since the paperwork doesn't match the watch, and the box doesn't seem to be specific to the watch either.

IMO there’s little benefit to selling this level of watch with a specialist auction. Much more hassle and as @Dan S says, you’ll probably the same or more on eBay after fees.

You have a good point there as i know these boxes fetch high prices.
Thanks for your expertise input as this is the only time since ownership that i have delved into its background .

If you had the services in the past done by Omega, they should have returned the parts they replaced in a little baggie with the watch. The original hands would be in there. They change hands if the lume is starting to crack or fall out (which is very common).

Also keep in mind, Speedmaster market is ‘soft’ at the moment. It would be better to wait it out if at all possible.

Lastly, since the paperwork doesn’t match the serial on the watch, it might be worth selling the box separately.
