Thanks. I think some of us were wondering if it might have been a straight writing back.

Would appreciate any expert knowledge on these beauties such as how to date them , values and best way to sell.
As far as value goes, you won't lose any money for sure 🙄

Can’t really tell from that. We’re looking to see if there’s a slight lip/ridge on the inside of the minute track or if it’s all flat.

Not the same reference, but the step is really obvious in this photo.

Here you will find information regarding value. In terms of best way to sell, you are on track with the set of pictures you already posted 😉

Out of interest, and hopefully you won’t mind me asking, but how much did you pay in 1976 and how much was that in relation to, say, a weeks wages?

I’d be very interested to know.

I was expecting that question! . Well the answer is £153 and i paid in 3 instalments as my wage was around 100 per week which was a good income then. I couldn't resist it and the fact that it came with a (cardboard box) made no difference to me as it was the watch i was intrested in..

I think the photos are good enough, and I'm not seeing a step, which is what one would normally expect for a Speedmaster purchased in 1976, but not so common for a 31M serial number. If you ever get the watch opened, check out the serial number for yourself to double-check.

Does no step mean no good!!
Not at all, just speculation that it may be an earlier model based on the serial number. My personal guess is it is a 145.022-74 which is still a nice collectible Speedy.

edited to add: the 31xxx are notoriously hard to date as they are spread non sequentially through -69, -71 & -74 models but that with no step dial is most likely a -74

Not necessarily but a few things need confirming.

The serial is more appropriate for a pre moon or straight writing -69, yet the dial is from -74 onwards (which goes in better with your purchase date). If it were mine I’d get it to a competent watchmaker to remove the caseback and check the serial is definitely 30,009xxx and it’s not an error on the card. Also check case ref inside the caseback.

Agree with taking and knowing for sure, but serial is pictured as 31009xxx (hangtag) not 3009 which gets it to the wide range I mentioned before.

Not sure what year of manufacture, can you tell by serial number.
It’s a -74 or early 76 by the dial.

the bezel….

i think we have a bitsa…

yes typo I meant 31,009xxx. While it’s possible this is correct for a -74 it’s still very early IMO.

Movement and caseback picture required to hopefully shed further light...

That was quick!

So it’s a 32,xxxxxx serial? That’s makes much more sense and seems correct.

It does unfortunately mean the hang tag isn’t matching.

So, the dial is period correct for corresponding serial # on the movement. The hang tag and receipt (should it also have the incorrect serial) don’t add much value to your watch.

It’s a lot more important to have the right dial vs hang tag/receipt etc.
