My new vintage: Omega Seamaster Cosmic - 165.023

Hi all,

I’m new here because I’ve purchased my first vintage Omega earlier today. It’s a 165.023 with a green dial, crosshair, Seamaster Cosmic, purchased on Catawiki. I expect it to arrive somewhere next week.

The seller says it is fully original, only the dial has been ‘restored’. Personally I think the dial has been completely replaced, because the fonts look bigger to me. Obviously the bracelet has been renewed. What do you make of it? I just love the looks and the numerals of it.

One question from me though as this is my first vintage Omega: how does the crown works? Is this just regular (clockwise for winding it up, and pull out and clockwise for setting the time)? Or different?

Thanks!
Jeroen

Welcome to OF

It sounds like you've found a watch that you really like, which is great. Some watch enthusiasts frown on refinished dials, but it's your watch so your's is the opinion that matters.

The crown operates as you describe. You can wind the watch in it's first position or pull it out one click to adjust the time (either direction is fine). That watch has an automatic movement and will wind itself from arm movement, so if you wear it daily, you may never need to wind it manually.

If you are going to wear the watch often, you might want to consider having it serviced by a watchmaker. Mechanical watch movements are a bit like automotive engines: they need to have their oil changed and internal parts cleaned periodically. Otherwise they can fail rather catastrophically. Since your watch is over 50 years old, it is likely long past due for maintenance. If you let us know your location, someone here can probably recommend a good local watchmaker.

Hi there and welcome,

No one can be certain whether the dial has been replaced or not but be aware that the term "restored" can often be used to describe a multitude of interventions. All the way from slight cleaning to a complete stripping or paint over of the original dial and repaint in a new style. I suspect yours has had the full monty.

That said I think the watch is attractive and if you like it then wear it in good health and enjoy it. Dial originality is rightly cherished by collectors but shouldn't stop your pleasure.

All the best

Gav

I agree it looks nice, even if it's been redialed. Enjoy it! Please share some photos when you get it, I always like to see green watches.

It's a very nice watch. Personally I did not spot it's redial so maybe members with more knowledge can explain what details to look to spot a redial. Enjoy it!

Congrats for your first buy, usually the hardest! I like that this year a a no date version!

The pictures aren’t great, but the dial doesn’t look outrageous at first glance. With redials, it’s the lottery - you can get very well executed ones and atrocious ones too! (mostly the latter)

The case likely a bit polished, but hard to tell how much. In any case, definitely one that can be enjoyed as a daily wearer!

Welcome to the forum!

Congrats on your pickup and welcome to this forum! There are so many great people here with so much knowledge. I used to own a date version of that Seamaster and really liked it. I hope that you enjoy it!

Hi all, this afternoon I received the watch, it looks really lovely! I especially like the color of the dial (green/blue-ish) and the numerals. And because the size is a bit smaller than I’m used to (Piaget Polo S, 42mm) it wears very light. A happy owner here!

Looks great and that strap fits it nicely! I prefer the no date version as well. Enjoy
