Just to mention I had my brothers cream dial Daytona sent in for a full service recently

Of course they are against any natural aging that people love and that adds value... 😡

Unless there is a way they can profit from it, they will be against it.

Better to continue to milk you for repairs, they are a business in the end ... and not a benevolent one ::stirthepot::

Just to mention I had my brothers cream dial Daytona sent in for a full service recently, it looked amazing the colour was very rich compared to my white Daytona. Rolex noted dial needed replacing, I declined. More back and forth and they say that they can’t service the watch without replacing the dial, I asked how and why that was the case l, after a bit of a wait I get told the dial surface had separated from the dial, I still have the detailed pre service photos and find that very hard to believe, the independent who had taken it apart a few weeks earlier and declined the job on the basis that it needed Rolex parts he couldn’t source agreed the dial was fine, just cream. Rolex didn’t want it going back cream, they won in the end and now it’s getting replaced, and my brother is paying a lot of his own money to fix a defect in that batch of Daytona dials around 2002 that he was perfectly content with keeping.
I sent my 16800 to Kings Hill a couple of weeks ago and they insisted the dial was "water damaged". My watch does not have water damage but there is a slight crackling of the dial surface making it look matte which in my opinion improves the overall look of a 35 year old watch. After some back and forth they finally agreed to service it without a replacement dial subject to the addition of a "disclaimer" to preclude damage resulting from the dial from a warranty claim. I am more than happy to agree to this. I had to make it VERY clear they that do not refinish the case. Fingers crossed... In the 1990's I never had this issue even with dials that showed slight signs of aging. I cant wait for its return!!!!!

One reason why you never ever send a vintage Rolex to an AD for service.

In fairness I have never had any issues with Kings Hill. You just need to be explicit about your requirements but they do seem to be increasingly picky. A few years ago they swapped out a dial on my 5512 and to be honest this was because of lack of clarity on my part. However, a letter to Mr Hudson soon had this matter resolved.

Looks
I got my second hand Milgauss in 2015. Its the black dial/clear crystal version.

Over the 5 years I have owned it the dial has moved from black-adjacent, to a distinctly dark slate grey. In other words, as it gets older its turning grey. It is hard to photograph.

I have seen more extreme examples reported in other forums. These are not mine or my photos but it shows where mine is headed:

It brings up a few questions for me
1. I want to keep it all original but it is moving away from the watch I bought and liked very much. I am not crazy about the orange grey combo but replacing the dial seems like a step too far as the second hand is also fading at its own rate and a new dial would look jarring...which then leads to replacing the second hand...soon it will be an horological Ship of Theseus. What are your thoughts on conservation vs restoration in this case where the core of the colour values of the watch design are no longer in place?

2. Is this patina?

3.If this is patina, would it still be patina for another brand?

Thanks for your thoughts. And a gratuitous shot of mine at Wellington, FL a few years ago where the dial is no longer black

Looks beautiful

RSC Australia is pretty nasty when it comes to stuff like this, there are zero parts accounts in Australia for Rolex so they’re the only game in town and they know that unfortunately which is why they refuse to negotiate. Sad situation really.

This "Granit Grey" Milgauss was on Chrono24 from a seller in Austria (for $8860...the prices of Rolex watches on the second hand market continue to astound me). Not only has the black paint faded on this one but also the orange indices are fading around the edges. Its interesting to observe more examples of faded dials appear over time.

I find the faded look attractive in this case. The prices on Rolex are out of control in my opinion but I still like the brand.

I like the look as well. Probably should pick one up now because you know they will be crazily priced in a few years time.

Absolutely gorgeous. Hopefully it fades more and stabilizes at some point. I would absolutely not touch this. Uncommon defects are awesome.

Here is another one that was for sale recently in France.

[- VENDU -] Rolex Milgauss Faded dial - 7900€
posté par CharlieHP, 29.01.2021, 08:41
(Modifié par CharlieHP le 16.03.2021, 18:29)

MARQUE : Rolex
MODELE : 116400
ANNEE : 2009

I’m sure prices on grey dials will skyrocket pretty soon.

No one is better at convincing themselves that poor quality is desirable than (wannabe) Rolex owners.

J'aime vraiment cette montre. Si j'avais de l'argent, je l'achèterais certainement.

I don’t have 2 Milgauss to compare. This one was purchased 2009, the Batman was purchased 2021.

I have noticed the greying, but it is so slow that its hard to tell.

It does look dark grey even when new. But I need to put an old one and a new one side by side to see if there is change.
