Just wanted to share an amazeing find i made today. I must admit i never was after a vintage piece, but after i saw this one listed, i jumped into my car and drove 2 hours to check it out in person. It was an instant feeling, but somehow it felt good. The nice old lady told me that her mother wore it for 10 years before she passed away, and before that it belonged to her uncle, who only wore it occasionally. I didnt have a reason not to trust her. And once i opened the box and discoveredd the papers inside were stamped (1961) with the same town where i got the watch from, i was convinsed that she is telling the truth. Its a small town in Austira (~20k inhabitants), so what are the odds.. it seems the watch never left the hometown the plexiglas is pretty scratched (i guess its original, there is an Omega logo in the middle), but the dial is clean and unmolested. it does look like it was worn a lot, but i dont mind, i actually like it even more this way (i mean its a 60 year old watch afterall) The only thing i was insecure, is that the lady said they never serviced the watch. and i didnt have the chance to open it yet (not like i can make a diagnosis anyway). so it might be a mess inside, but this i have to discover yet. Since i am an absolute noob in vintage watches i am really excited. It seems to run fine, but i have no timing machine to check the amplitude and all. so i will take it slow from now and maybe try to make some tests with the "Tg 0.5.0" software first. Here some pics:
Really fine pick up. Congrats. Let's see pics of the dial close up, and the papers please! Better if it's never been serviced, less chance that it's had parts replaced. Is the crown original to the watch? I'm not sure on these models, especially in gold. Can't be a 14381. It is more likely a 14393 - as it has a date feature.
Thats for sure! To be honest i have no idea which reference it is. unfortuntelly there is no reference Nr. in the paperwork. is this bad? As i said, i am no expert, so i dont know if the crown is original to it. Unfortunatelly i didnt manage to take a proper photo of the dial, because the glas ist so scratched. i will try to order some polywatch to clean up the glas a little bit. should i be carefull here, not to polish out the Omega logo?
The crown isn’t original but that doesn’t detract from a really nice gold Connie. Congratulations - with a polished crystal the watch will shine. (Be careful not to touch the bezel when polishing the crystal - gold is soft. )
Very nice full set rare to find this style of box in a complete condition with the watch carrier insert and the chronometer certificate is usually missing My 1963 full set say hello
Waw, that is a beautiful set you have there! What is the "watch carrier insert"? Is there a Reference Number on your Warranty card? cant see it on your photo.
The insert is the tray that holds the watch. It is usually missing, as people threw them out and used the box for storing jewelry etc. I have a full set (missing outer box...) 14393 too and it has the ref. no. noted on the warranty. It is no big deal, as these were filled out by the dealer. As long as the serial number matches, everything should be good.
Does anyone know the Ref. Number for the original Omega buckle this watch? or at least a picture. Big thanks!
There wouldn't be a reference number on the buckle. It's not a buckle you can order from omega again. Someone may be able to find a picture for you but I wouldn't go crazy trying to find one, personally. There are more important things to a collector than the buckle. That crown however...
You can still get on ebay from time to time English hallmarked 9K buckles in this date range. This would be a nice fit and i have done this for my 18k connies. Earlier buckles were rounded, and from about 1963 they became squarer, but you can date both types accurately They used to sell for around gbp100, but i fear those days may be long gone now
Thank you very much for the input! there is a lot of buckles offered online, at least now i know what i should be looking for. Leave me alone, the crown is fine!!
So finally got the chance to open the case. Reference Nr. is 14393/4 SC 12. The good knews is that the serial number matches papers. Not so good knews is that the rotor seems to be a little loose and leaves a mark on the caseback. Or maybe its not the rotor that is lose, but the caseback pressed in a little.. While waiting for Polywatch to arrive, managed to get rid of the fine scratches on plexiglas using a bit of toothpaste. It is so amazeing, never thought i would be so fastinated by a 60 year old watch The only unusual thing is the 34mm size.. Have to get used to such a slim and small watch after wearing a 41mm diver on daily bases. So i will try to find a proper strap in order to compensate the small size.
