·I got into Speedmasters through an interest in racing dials. And I could have been happy with a couple of those (Mk II and Japan) but then my wife got me the new white dial Speedy for our anniversary.
So then I developed a perfectionist itch. Three Speedmasters and no classic black dial. I think we all know how that’s going to go.
But where to begin? The brain itch only required a back dial and wasn’t concerned with much else. Dots can orbit 90s (and 70s) any which way they please. I had to ask myself, if I could only have a single black dial Speedy for the rest of my life, what would I go for?
Back when researching the Japan racing dial about a year ago I remembered also coming across articles about the 220 bezel. There was something about that oddity that piqued my interest. Plus the 145.022-69 is a fascinating reference especially when going through the transition from pre-moon to moon watches.
It took a good chunk of 2025 with some twists, turns and dead ends, but then the planets suddenly and unexpectedly aligned and I knew I had found it.
Without more ado, my new (to me) 145.022:
Now balance in the universe. The yin and the yang.
