Hello all, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Joe. I have been reading the posts here for almost a year and love the expertise and banter among members! I want to tell you about my Speedmaster story…. So here it goes.

My Dad passed away a few years ago( I know you all heard this one already 😎) and it was up to me to go through his belongings. He was a respected Lieutenant in the local police department and a firearms dealer as well. One day I had a few guys over to browse through the guns. While looking around one of the guys (with a huge Rolex on his wrist) saw something on my dad’s dresser. It was an Omega box. He asked if he could have a look and of course I obliged. He opened it up and looked straight at me…. He said this is a Dot over ninety, do you know what you have? I looked at him and said I don’t know what you’re talking about.

My Mom confirmed the watch has been sitting in that box on the dresser for 43 years! My dad stopped wearing it in about 1980.

So I did what most people would do and googled Speedmaster. The first thing that came up was Speedmaster 101. I emailed the site and within a day Mr. Spacefruit got back to me. After some negotiation I sold the watch to William for what I believe was a lot of money. That was the problem…. I had money on the brain!! Shortly after, I found OF and did a lot of reading about family heirlooms. What did I do?! I called William and instantly he said you should have your watch back.!!! After he restored the watch it came back to me!!! It will go to my boy when he gets older. I have it now and pictures will follow. Thank you William, you are a true gentleman.

Welcome Joe - it’s wonderful that you were able to get your fathers watch back. I have my father’s Omega, and it’s one of my most cherished possessions.

I’ll also say, you have what many collectors would deem to be a simply amazing Speedmaster. The combination of the brown dial, exceptional lume and condition of the DON make it extremely desirable to collectors (as I’m sure you’ve learned). I agree, William is a true gentleman for agreeing to get it back to you…the allure of a piece like this would have made it very difficult for many collectors to let go of. Wear it in good health!

Does this imply there is a Junior Fruit? Does he collect the Speedy Reduced 🤔

A heartwarming story and watch.

Kudos to Mr. Fruit! 👍 IMO not many (if any) collectors would return it after a fair deal had be done.

The watch is lovely, and with a very nice history.

Here is the full story from @Spacefruit :

I want to thank everyone for their kind words and comments! Thank you! 😊

I know there is a lot of debate on how Speedmaster dials turn brown. Maybe this watch can help let us learn?

The watch spent it’s entire life in Long Island, NY. USA.
My parents had a house on the ocean with no air conditioning so the summers were hot and humid! The windows were always open and the salt air blew through the house. Winters were very cold.

Not sure, as I am no expert, but I think all those years of humidity and salt air helped turn this dial into the beautiful thing it is today! Again, I am no expert.

If it is in one of the two serial ranges for 145.022-69 brown dials, there's no mystery or debate or need to speculate.

He is, and a scholar too. An unusual combination these days…
