Moving on from my Aqua Terra?

… I couldn’t do it!

From 1st gen to 3rd, my personal story / thoughts

I love my Aqua Terra and when I bought it in 2004 in Singapore I’ve worn it every day since and hadn’t looked at another watch until this year. That was when the clasp started to go a little and I realised it was also due a service. I looked into it and realised I could part exchange my watch for almost double what I had paid and for £2k get a current model. I think omega had quoted £175 for the clasp + the usual service charge, so it was worth me considering.

To be honest I had never been sure in the newer shinier models, or the lines on the face but I took the plunge.

I’ve now had the new 38mm one for a few weeks and am growing to love it too, although it wasn’t perfection on first sight like my original.

Few things I’ve noticed:
It is much shinier than my old one, with all the polish and much more noticeable / flashy. In the sun it is very shiny. I much prefer looking at it when the lines are less noticeable inside.
There is a slight high pitch whine if I press my ear on it that my old one didn’t. Not an issue but I had got used to the sound of my old one.
It runs a few seconds fast each day which I’m also having to adapt to after years of my old one running a few seconds slow each day.

Plus points to me:
I hadn’t any issues with the date at 9 on my old one but for some reason I really love the date at 6 o’clock.
The clasp is robust and more comfortable.
The glow is much better, I could hardly see the lume on my old one after a few minutes.

Overall I’m really pleased, but I am keeping half an eye out for a 41mm Oyster Perpetual in black, mainly because the bracelet is less shiny…

photo of old 39mm and new 38mm attached, let me know if anyone has any questions on either model…

First off, the date on your old one is at 3, not 9 😜

Second off, do what you like! If you're looking for opinions, well, I personally am not a fan of the new AT iterations. I have a Skyfall myself, but if I couldn't buy that, I'd actually buy the older model you have because it's such a classic look. There's a reason why the value went up on it.

I also don't like having multiples of the same model if possible, there are just so many other watches (brands and models) out there that I could be missing out on. Some people love specific models and will keep buying them, but I just couldn't do it. Not to mention they'd fight for wrist time and it'd be hard for me to figure out which one to wear.

In any case, enjoy! Different strokes for different folks, but that's why I enjoy this hobby. Everyone has a different road to take.

Thanks T60, brain freeze on a Friday about the date!?

I looked at other omegas - love the Seamaster 300 and the heritage version of it. The all black moon watch was also v nice but out of my price range. Tudor Pelagos, Panerai and a few IWC watches were tempting but still came back to the Aqua terra. Might well have gone to Rolex if it wasn’t so difficult to get a steel one though…

like you said each to their own and I love the versatility of these omegas

I brushed the bracelet open my AT because I too dint like the polished links. It looks amazing and IMO much more appropriate fourth model

Call me crazy but I enjoy polished center links. It definitely dresses up the watch which I appreciate for my office environment and attire that I wear to work.

Yes of course they are scratch magnets, mostly on the underside of the bracelet so...who cares.

I’m quite liking the polished links now too, it’s just taken me a little while to get used to it! I love how varied they appear depending on the lighting

I think it will be a while before I’m brave enough to consider getting them brushed even though that looks great

You can brush a few links for giggles, and then re-polish them tomorrow if you don't like the look. Not a big deal.

I don't know about the polishing because I've never done it. The bruising is super easy. I uses a little sandpaper but you can use other things and made sure to brush on the same direction throughout and then a little cape cod finish. That's all. 5 minutes.

This reminds me I should do it again because that was done years ago and the bracelet has some wear since then so I'll re brush it one of these days.

Thanks for sharing your AT story! Incredible watch and pedigree. Another vote for your PCLs here. The 38mm one you picked up is the exact one I’d get… one of my favorite models in OMEGA’s lineup. Your old one looks great, as well. Nice to see it has been put to use over the years. Too many owners baby their watches!

I absolutely love the AT and Datejust. They’re icons, and I always think about getting one - but I know I’d always want to reach for a Seamaster 300 or Speedmaster instead to also have a timing complication… so I live voraciously through owners such as yourself! 😀

Also— props for wearing the same watch all these years. It is easy to go down the rabbit hole once you get a second one. I aim to never have more than 2-3, and often think about consolidating to just 1. There’s a lot to say for simplicity.

I think the shinier bracelet is a common complaint. The Rolex OP is a great watch. Highly recommend it
