Model no identification

Evening,

I’m still a newbie and although I’ve got 5 Omegas now I’m still not certain on somethings.

I picked this watch up the other day and although a little rough I didn’t pay a lot for it, a new acrylic, crown, strap and a clean up and it will be a nice daily watch.

I’ve got to be honest too, although not everyone’s cup of tea I like the patina on the dial too.

can anyone tell me firstly how to correctly identify what model this is; on the case back it’s got

2846 9SC
2848

I’ve done a little bit of searching the forum and understand that the case back is common between the 2846 and 2848 but which is mine and also, what does the 9 SC mean?

It’s gold plated which I’m unsure if someone has done at a later date?

Also do you think the dial is genuine?

Finally, could anyone confirm if the correct replacement acrylic is
PY5000
Or
PY5140

and is the correct crown a 4 leaf clover SX42023

Pictures below,

Thanks again,
Matty

Yeah, Omegas are best when acquired by the dozen.

It really can become more about the number of items, than each individual item. Never worry about the quality of things. There will always be better examples out there.

This is a 2846 as the 2848 has a sub-second movement. 5140 should be the crystal and 42023 should be the correct crown for this reference, but hopefully someone else can confirm that.

Thank you for your clarification and confirmation for me.

Yeah I have to agree here, its nice to have some great examples im sure but at the end of the day they are watches i want to wear everyday and will get a little knocked about from time to time so I don't think there's much point in being too precious as long as they look presentable and function correctly, funilly enough, I had a read through your eBay addiction post before and I have been on the constant scan for them, however these what I have picked up in the past im getting way less than eBay prices so I'm more than happy!!

Could anyone provide an equivalent acrylic from Cousins that would be suitable replacement please as an inbetween as a genuine Omega Acrylic seems hard to come by at a reasonable price ($115 plus postage to the UK)

I understand from a previous post from @Archer that the sizes are as follows;

063PZ5140 | GLASS PLEXI ST RING D29.62 H4.7

063PZ5000 | GLASS PLEXI ST RING D29.62 H4.3

I have seen some that I think will fit on Cousins but there’s a standard gold ring or a recessed gold ring?

Sternkreuz ATG266
Or
Sternkreuz ATGR266

or are there any better quality Arcylics that anyone would recommend?

thanks again

Some 2000 grit wet sanding and polywatch will likely make that crystal look acceptable. I see the logo on it too, so that's good. Or you could have the WM do it at service time.

I think the case is factory gold filled as I doubt an aftermarket plating would leave the back of the lugs unplated.

I have considered that and will give it a go first, I have polished a few with 1200 grit (a little course in previous experience) and I’ve only had toothpaste to polish up so I was thinking of ordering some poly watch and giving it a go.
Yeah I noticed the Omega logo too, I’d like a new genuine acrylic but seem thin on the ground which is why I thought about replacing with a cheap one until I could find a fair enough priced genuine

I'm not familiar with the Sternkreuz versions, but I have used the G&S PA 461 in place of a 5140. The only caveat is that it doesn't come with a tension ring, so you will need to reuse your old one with it.

I agree with Bruce235 that it wouldn't hurt to try to polish the current crystal. Wet sanding using 800 / 1500 / 2500 grit sand paper in that order followed by polywatch has worked well for me. Here is a video showing the technique (go to 29:45):

Here is what the PA 461 looks like:

Thank you for your help,

yeah I’ll definitely give the wet/ dry paper and some polywatch first as it would be great to save the original. I may look to order the PA461 too as a back up.

@Mattyd199, curious to know what you end up doing... Did you replace it with a Sternkreuz?

I gave it a good polish with some wet and dry and polywatch, it’s currently stored away but I’ll dig out and get some photos, it did turn out pretty well although from memory the crystal wasn’t a genuine Omega 🥴
