Mexico hurricane Patricia, advice needed

Question, in 2 weeks, 2 friends of mine and I will be flying to mexico (first couple of days Mexico city, than off to the west coast, near Puerta Vallarta). A big ass huricane is likely to land in that area (patricia). We can still reschedule our plans to go the east coast instead. If we'd rearrange, we 'only' lose 200 euro (internal flight from mexico city to Puerta Vallarta).

If the hurricane does not hit that area directly, would you rearrange the plans or just go there?

Even if it only passes by, the weather will be horrible.

Ye, but it lands tomorrow, so that is still 2 weeks before we arrive. That's the dilemma haha.

If it hits as hard as the forecasters are saying it will, there won't be much point going there anyway.

Look into Tulum, I go there one or two times a year and love it. There are hotels for all budgets but it is not a club scene like Cancun or playa del carmen. There is a great hotel called Ahau there. a little more expensive but worth it imo.

Of course if you're young and need the noise and action then stay in Cancun.

Puerto Vallarta did not impress me at all while under plenty sun shine and blue skies...I only can imagine the area after a cat 5 storm... :( Playa del Carmen and Tulum offer more desirable locales... that's of course IMO... good luck!

Hehe. We would go surfing there but not stay in PV but somewhere in that region. Eastcoast it is.

205mph sustained winds. Biggest hurricane to ever hit the western hemisphere. Landfall today. If it hits with the projected force there won't be much of P.V. to see anyway. Not that much normally. :D Go east young man.

My thoughts go out to the Mexicans tonight. I wouldn't want to be there right now.

Having lived through minor hurricanes, I can tell you that for weeks, even minor tasks become difficult. It might take months or years to fully restore power lines and phone service (especially cellphones). No power means no pumping gasoline, so no traveling by automobile.

I can't imagine how devastating a Cat. 5 storm will be to Western Mexico. Cities will be wiped off the map.

This was from Wilma in 2005. A Cat 2 storm, maybe. Winds of 100mph. Patricia will be double that plus some more.

Yes, I would change my plans as soon as possible.

Agreed - the area hit by Haiyan in the Philippines (comparable in strength to Patricia) is far from fully recovered 2 years later. A friend's brother is the governor of the province hardest hit (Leyte) and her mother a local mayor and they are still working hard to get things restored.

And the power from the wind is proportional to wind velocity cubed. So a doubling of wind speed theoretically produces 8 times the destructive power. Scary.
