Man, I would have offered to buy it off of him, and help him find a modern replacement so he won't do without a Speedy.

I think that the approach makes sense, give your contact info, so if the day comes he wants to part with it, he will contact you.

I have had this happen on occasion.

He actually did say he liked mine better because of the asymmetric case to protect the lugs and the larger pushers. Maybe I should try to trade him for my 145.022-76?

If you have his contact info, I would. In cases like these, many times people are happy to make money, get another watch, and pass their's on someone that will appreciate it.

Did you dare tell him it's fake?
Fake? He said it was a limited edition with a misspelling of mission on the back 馃槈

Man, I've still never had a situation like that where I was in a public place next to someone with an interesting watch / story related to it. So cool.

Very cool story. Flying out of the Palm Beach airport I often get to sit next to people with "interesting watches".
On a recent flight the person next to me was wearing one of these:

I was thinking of starting a conversation about the watch, but thought "What were you thinking?" would not be the best opening line.....

For any fans of The Office (US), this is exactly how I'd envision my conversation with someone wearing that Rolex. What Michael wrote on the cue cards is what would be running through my head. What I managed to ask would likely just end up like the following:

Your supposed to snatch and run...practice at home on your wife, after a few weeks you will get real good at it and your collection will improve immensely.

Yours supposed to snatch and run.

The OP probably didn't have a parachute.

I just had the pleasure of sitting next to an older gentleman on a plane....

It is always a delicate balance between being a full-on WIS, and simply complimenting a stranger's watch. I had someone tell me that they liked my watch (Rolex GMT at the time). I politely thanked them and told them that it's just a watch. I've also had a lot of people ask if the watch was a fake/replica. Most of the time, I just smile and change the subject.

I thought in the moment that I would have been crossing some sort of line to ask to take a picture of his watch. Maybe he would have been ok with it but I enjoyed taking to him and I didn't want to potentially ruin it by being too pushy.
