Can anyone give me some advice re a medicus I bought, please?
I knew it wasn't keeping time, but my local repairer says it needs a new balance spring. Everyone I talk to says they are rare and I don't have much chance! I know it's not a particularly valuable watch, but I think it's historically interesting and I'd like to have it working property in my collection.
Can anyone help?

The dial is very appealing, so I'm sure it will be very nice once it is restored. You might also want to look for a better minute hand.

Hi @David1954 - I think you're going to be looking for a complete balance... this might take timer and a lot of patience...
Yes, that's what my repairer said. He' has just retired, so I guess I'll have to be patient AND lucky!

Hi,

Very nice watch. Beautiful dial, ensure that no one touches it during the watch restoration.

The long second hands (with either oval or round counterweight) is correct for this model. The minutes (sword) hand is incorrect by the way. If you one day get tired of looking for a balance, DIBS.

Here, with two other famous waterproof models (CK 2111 "Naiad", and CK1064 pocket watch), in a 1940Swiss catalog :

Thank you for the interesting info and pictures. It's very different to the other vintage omegas in my collection, but I think it's a nice looking watch and I'd like it to be working so I can wear it! The guy I bought it from said it was his father's who was a medic in the 40s and 50s.

In the moment are 2 watches on eBay. Both from Russia. Ladies omegas labelled. You search for them. One is under US$500. They will take offers.... That balance is described as working, so that gamble might pay off....

You might want to consider another watchmaker having a look. A balance spring is not such a big deal. The balance cock looks a bit wanky at the base and screw obviously missing, but may be repairable. From the pics I can’t really tell condition of the balance wheel/pin. Very cool looking watch!

Thanks for the comments. The watch was working when I took it to the repairer, but not keeping time. It came back like this with the screw missing and no longer ticking! I'm struggling to find another repairer in the UK to look at it. I joined the watch repair forum to see if I can find someone.

Please name this so called “watchmaker” so he can be avoided at all costs.

To be fair, he had done a lot of good work in the past, but he did this and a botched repair on a vintage waltham of mine just before he shut up shop and retired! Guess he lost interest.

When nerves fray and hands are not as steady, the slope is dangerously steep.

At least he realized it. Just remember all the good.
