that's what i love about collecting too. Sometimes you discover things you didn't know had historical significance and provenance to them.

Did they send it back to Cuba with his severed hands?

Did they send it back to Cuba with his severed hands?
it was given to his father so I doubt it.

Hi fellow watch lovers, I have acquired a very special Flying Dutchman that I wanted to share with you.

It seems that the Black dial variants are less common than the white ones an my watch has a dial that I have never seen before:

This dial variant with the silver indices on Black sunray dial seems to be very uncommon, I have found a few images online of White sunray dials with silver indices but not a single one in Black.

The watch still has the original radium lume on the dial and possibly also on the hands. A Geiger counter shows some radiation when I put it next to the dial. The case also seems to be in good shape, so I decided to only get the movement serviced.

Has anybody of you ever seen this type of Flying Dutchman? Are there official numbers of how many have been produced over time?

Best Regards and greetings from Austria,

Clemens

That one has a lovely dial variant that I haven't seen previously. But it is certainly original. I have no idea on how many there were made but the serial ranges seem to bee between 79x xxx and 1 000 000 ish. Of course marvin produced multiple other watches since this period seems to have a span of a decade or so. Mostly just guess work I've been doing over the 3 last years so I might be wrong here.

Hello and thank you very much for your reply. Wow, a Serial Range of a bit over 210.000 for all produced Marvins in the whole production period of the Flying Dutchman is really little, considering the scale in which todays "hard to get" luxury watches are pumped out, makes you reconsider the term "rarity"... 😉 Unfortunately my watch is still on my watchmakers bench as he is drowning in work currently. I'm looking forward so badly to having this watch back on my wrist. Definitely the most special piece in my collection.

I've been wearing my 2 flying dutchmen lately and it had me revisiting this thread. One is the black "che" variant and the other an uncommon waik-up alarm version. I the movement in the waikup is also quite well finished being an ebauche. There is quite an interesting video on youtube about it as well:
. Still wonderfully cool watches. Turns out they wear wonderfully on straight link bracelets.
