On first blush this speedmaster looks correct but really its not:

Wrong bezel (even the replaced one is wrong), wrong pushers (too big) wrong hands (both subdial and the minute had - too short), wrong dial (should have a non-tritium dial). Movement though if it is 17,6xx,xxx as far as I can tell is correct for the 2998-2. Obviously the asking price is way too high for this particular example. Shows you the many pitfalls when buying a cal. 321 speedmaster - the earlier the more dangers there are!

Well it does have a nice lollypop chrono hand. You say that the "original" bezel is wrong too. Should it be a base 1000 bezel? When did they change? Do you like this better?

Added photos to the original post for completeness. I have to be honest, I saw this on eBay earlier and literally thought, damn, nice looking watch before reading this thread. Was never going to be a buyer at 8.5k but still disturbing to see

There are a number of the Speedy Pre-moons for sale on Chrono24. Don't know if its ok to post a
link here, but if you google speedmaster lollipop, one shows up with box and papers for $16K as the first result.
Both bezels on the Bay example are definitely wrong. I can't really tell about the dial and hands.

Its totally fine to mention chrono24, or even to link directly to ads, same for eBay and for other forums, only rules regarding censorship are counterfeit and/or fake watches, zero tolerance on that, anything else is fine.

The chrono24 watch has lots of problems too - wrong bezel (that came from a modern reissue speedmaster homage to the 2915) wrong dial - tritium dials were not used until the 105.003 (it was radium up to the 105.002), wrong hands - probably all of them including the lollipop, and wrong bracelet (too late) and possibly wrong box (though not 100% sure on that one). So the chrono24 watch is just as wrong at twice the price!

The 2915-3 up to the 2998-2 had the black base 1000 bezel.

Well! I guess $8.5K doesn't get us much of the real deal these days! :D

I'll be saddened if the reserve is still $8,500 like before....

Judging by the ad, I get the impression the owner may have bought it from a dealer at dealer prices and be trying to recover as much as possible

Speaking of Speedmaster with wrong bits:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Omega-Speed...482779470?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item484a373d4ePurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network

Straight lug no crown guard case, but with Pro dial and 145.012-67 caseback, lume appears redone, and although the seller CLAIMS its been serviced, the hours subdial hand looks like it was pinched off a Flightmaster and painted white, which doesn't look like something any competent watchmaker would ever consider.

I brought up the issue with him last week. We've been discussing it via email. He bought the watch from a dealer he trusts. The dealer claimed to have bought the watch from the original owner. He pointed out a number or 2998's that have the tritium dial, all of which have a patina that comes with age. There are also a number of 2998's that have alpha hands that are a bit shorter, like his.

It is not unusual when reading the various Omega forums to come across statements about how Omega didn't empty the parts bin when something changed but used up the older parts. The dot over 90 bezel for instance appears on c321 Speedmasters made up until 1968, and also on early c861 Speedmasters in 1968 and 1969. The 105.002 which didn't have a long production run started out with alpha hands and ended up with stick hands. The tritium dial appears on the 105.003 watches. Could there have been some later 2998 and 105.002 watches made with the new tritium dial?
As far as funny hands go, check out this watch:

I am pretty sure the tritium dials absolutely did not come original from the factory for the 2998. They were first used in the 105.003 and not earlier. The hands that are shorter are also wrong - these came from seamasters that were then fitted to the speedmaster thus looking shorter in the speedmaster. And in your examples of parts overlap, the trend is always that earlier parts are used for later models until they are finished - here what is being proposed is the opposite - newer parts used in older models which does not make sense.

That certainly makes more sense than the argument the dealer is putting forward. Ultimately its a premium grade watch or at least carried a premium grade price tag and for that, the dealer should be able to provide more than excuses.
