Looks familiar - haven't I seen that watch before?

I was perusing the local Craigslist and saw an interesting watch in poor condition. Ran a google search and hmmm ... look what I found, the same watch. Same stains on the dial, same marks on the lume, same missing lume from the hands. Be careful out there, friends.

If it's Craigslist, are you not supposed to meet the guy and see the watch in person before pulling the trigger ? Where is the scam?

"Scam" is probably an appropriate word for what happened to that poor sucker.

It is odd. I hate to tell you how much stuff I’ve sold on Craigslist and locally. Many people request meeting in front of a police station or just a densely populated area which I never have a problem with. But with people taking such precautions what is the scam?

I see. It makes you wonder why he decided to spend $2k for that particular watch.

Would you feel safe selling expensive watches on CL ?

I have no problem buying or selling expensive watches locally and in person. I wouldn't bother listing them on CL though, mainly because I don't think it would be particularly effective.

I have met a guy who rolled up with his box full of 4 Rolex, Tudors and a fifty fathoms. We are still friends to this day. I got my captain cook, a 60’s Connie an a KS from him. Most I’ve ever sold is a 900 dollar watch which I still regret. So myself personally would be yes as long as you are smart about the meet and keep the baseball bat under a blanket in the car but close by. You also need to consider the town you are meeting in, look for cameras on poles as you roll up. Show up early if you don’t like the scene take off but honestly I’ve sold very expensive tools and I have never experienced a problem but I understand others may not feel ok doing so. It also helps I’m batshit crazy and like adrenaline rushes.

Ya I still use it but it’s definitely not like it used to be. People say they were too slow to roll out an app and modernize, I’m not savy enough to know if that is the true issue but there are numerous other sites that cater to face2face that garner quicker responses but seldom are the items I sell watches.

Back to Dan’s original point about suckers stuck with shitty watches-
I think people went a little nuts during the pandemic buying everything- particularly vintage everything (I was not immune from that).
The patina junkies came out of the woodwork and I think people were seeking some sense of a life well lived while they weren’t living much of any life of their own.

Now that the life is starting to return to normal and people are awaking from their lock-down drunken consumer rager, they look across the bed at their watch box and think- my god, what have I done.
We are going to see a lot of walks of shame across the quad in the coming months.

As long as you know who you're dealing with, I suppose it's fine.

I’m not quite clear on what’s happening here (or wherever, really). @Dan S, did you add the commentary to the photos? Someone coughed up $2K at a boutique for a watch and can’t unload it at half the price now? So the scam is the original price, not anything to do with Craigslist?
