·Funny thing happened. I am making a few lanyards this weekend and after perusing the OF message board I went into my workshop to get my “lanyard making box”. When I opened it…. There were horses peeking out!
I must have picked up this cheap watch for the chain attachment. Does not work. I think it’s mechanical but beyond that I have no clue.

The bottom of the dial says it was assembled in Hong Kong. Did Mad Dog ever fly Cargo Planes?

Why does it have to be a pocket watch?
Longines of course as stated above are the official timekeeper of a bunch of equestrian events and have been since the late 1800s or early 1900s.
Furthermore, Hermes which is known for its leather saddlemaking craft has themed a number of wrist watches inspired by equestrian sports, including the watch called “Etrier” (stirrups) jointly produced with JLC, or the Hermes model called “Arceau” which features an asymetric design inspired by equestrian buckles,
Or the model called “sellier” which they created for a big anniversary, with a nail pattern again inspired by saddle making.
It so happens I have a couple such Hermes watches which I’ve been contemplating selling as I’m no longer wearing them so much, but I had not yet found the energy 😉
Below is a “sellier” watch I already sold, and my “Arceau” watch which I still own.

One of the foremost equestrian centres in the world is our own Spruce Meadows. Rolex has that one locked up tight!

·👍 The movement isn’t great, just a basic 7j but the case is nice. Depending on who it’s for and your basic thoughts on watches, you could easily get a Hamilton 992 (21j RR grade) and recase into the horse case and have a pretty nice piece all around.
Depends on how much time and effort you want to put in but you can get it done for around $500 not including service. This lot won’t go for over $300 (best guess) and a good 992 can be had under $200 all day long. Combine the 2, sell the rest of youd like to cover the service. A bit of work but really not much.

·Why not go for something like a modern Tissot pocket watch. Either with the venerable Eta 6497 calibre, full size mechanical movement, or the smaller versions done with a quartz movement. Check around for a company that does laser engraving who can decorate the case with an equestrian theme.
