Looking for a watch that gains character with every scratch

    Hi!

    Due to having little kids and spending most of my time in the homeoffice these days, I‘ve been wearing my G-SHOCK almost exclusively for the last months. While it is a great piece it just doesn’t offer the same special and high quality feeling as my Moonwatch or my BB58.

    So I want to get a new watch with the following criteria:
    - not too big about 39 - 41 mm, 48 mm l2l max
    - very komfortable (like with a bracelet with quick adjustments)
    - from a brand with rich history (read no micros, no Kickstarter etc.)
    - preferably with a white dial (my collection lacks one but that is no must have)

    I want to spend 2.000 € max. Less is better! The good news: going used or grey is ok for me!

    I want to wear that one in almost every situation, like a daily beater. I just want to wear a nice watch without worrying about damaging it. It would be great if it is a watch that adds character with every scratch and dent. In my eyes watches with steel bezels do so e. g.

    My current ideas:
    Sinn 556 B (I prefer the Blue over the Black while o already have a blue watch)
    Sinn U 50 (very cool and unique but I already have a dive watch)
    Breitling Colt (would offer a white dial)
    Oris Aquis 41 (quick adjustment!! Every watch should have this - but I already got a diver)
    That titanium G-SHOCK square (I love squares but that is one expensive G-SHOCK)

    Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you in advance!

    SKX is pretty much the definition of that... maybe step up the Seiko diver line a little. Put it on a custom pass through leather strap and wear it.

    :edit: OMG I just noticed I set it wrong...

    Above the budget but the first thing that came to my mind was Rolex explorer ii 40 mm (the prior iteration) used. Tudor Ranger (thought not a white dial) would fit nicely as well.

    Seiko 5 and Hamilton khaki are my other go to suggestions and may fit well here.

    Sorry that my input isn’t super helpful. Good luck with your decision.

    The first thing that comes to mind is the IWC Spitfire Bronze (IW3268-02). Rich brand heritage, 39mm, 48.5 lug to lug, and the bronze will definitely gain character as time passes, even if you dont scratch it. It doesnt come on a bracelet, though, and would be twice your budget (although i havent looked at used prices much).

    I would consider stretching your budget a bit. I also apologize if this isnt helpful. But the IWC has already penetrated my mind and now i cant think of anything else.

    You already have two tool-watches that seem to fit the bill to me. Except for the white dial. Life is short, wear your Omega and your Tudor.

    I agree about wearing the watches you have. As for wearing with little kids, I bought these 2 to bang around without a care in the world.

    At the time, both were cheap.

    Older pre-owned Aqua Terra, fits the described white dial/price-range/size trifecta perfectly IMHO.

    I also don't see why you could not do well with a Seiko! A Sarb with white dial would fit every criteria and it is a very nice dressy kind of piece. It would complement your collection well, as you already have two great tool watches. It is also below your budget.

    I thank you guys for your suggestions - really appreciate them!

    @pw92676 and @Lotus_Eater8815
    I don't really like the idea of stretching ones budget. It's just 2k more and I could buy a IWC but when I add another 2k it could be the explorer - that never ends! :) I think I would feel best if I spend between 1k and maybe 2k max for that kind of watch.

    @Dan S
    You are absolutely right - especially the BB58 would be perfect for that use and I am sure it would look really good with some marks. But I just like that little guy so much and want to keep it prestine...

    @Rudi99
    Yeah! Seiko could be the way to go here. But at the moment I am eyeing the SPB143 - what a beautiful watch!

    that Seiko has everything I love about the really expensive divers... and just one quality I hate about the lower end ones. High quality bezel, classically good looking hands.

    I just loath the “X”

    The X is ok for me. I am more afraid about typical Seiko traits - misalignments and badly regulated movements e. g.

    Have been considering that nice SPB143 for a while but every time I look at my old SKX007 I think, why?. Seiko SKX007/9, just the best knockabout watches. Ever.

    I have not heard of any badly regulated movements... I have only ever seen +- 15 as new on the low end movements. Yes, Seiko says something like +-45 in the specs....

    Also after you get past the SKX and 5's I have never heard of an alignment issue...

    Hey, nice pick too! It is an absolute classic design of Seiko. I believe it also complements your collection nicely as both the BB58 and the Speedy are also classic tool watches with a vintage inspired design of both Tudor and Omega. (That is of course unless your Speedy is indeed a vintage one!)

    SPB143 is indeed a very sturdy one... Will definetely gain from those dings and dangs :thumbsup:

    CWC is a good choice. Auto or quartz. You will have to get used to cloth or leather though, as the bars are fixed.

    The CWC RN300 is a great call. I can't think of a watch that looks better a little beaten up. A new 1980 heritage reissue one would be at the top of your budget but they seem to be selling 2nd hand around £1500 and is a very handsome and comfortable watch.

    Otherwise, I think your Sinn options are great ideas, I have a 656 on a bracelet that gets a rough time and takes it with dignity.

    My suggestions are on the smaller side 36mm but both great daily wearers, tough with brand history and well within budget (at the moment)
    Smiths W10 .....
    F8DD2B76-0483-4ED0-B581-908DE1EE63F7.jpeg
    and a 1960’s Seiko 6145-8000 hi beat 36000 ( which has a white dial )
    If you want something larger at roughly your budget, then this ~ D737F288-393E-4CF4-9EEB-D17C23084D08.jpeg

    The Tudor bronze literally heals itself when it gets scratched or bumped, the oxide just goes to work on fresh scratches etc, it’s pretty cool :thumbsup:
