Looking at a 16800

so I’ve been craving a submariner for the last several months and I have been overwhelmed by the vintage Rolex market.
I’ve narrowed my search to a 16800 matte dial sub from the early 80’s, preferably 1983 (birth year).

I spotted one today and wanted to get some oppinions. As far as what I can tell the case has been polished, the bezel/hands/dial have been maybe swapped for service parts? That is not a deal breaker for me as I want a watch with a luminous service dial so that th lume does what it’s supposed to do. I intend on wearing this watch and not making it a safe queen. So long as it’s a matte service dial and not the glossy replacement from the 16610.
No movement shots but I’ve asked the seller to see if he will provide. If I get some I’ll update the thread.
Anyway please have a look let me know what you think. I value the opinions on this forum.

Thanks

Adam

The case is obviously over polished. Still good looking watch and the price of 16800 is climbing up fast especially the Matt dial

And I forgot to mention that the date magnifying on this watch is also not right. The date should appear bigger.

A 16800 is a good choice and this is mine which shows what an unpolished case looks like..................

It’s tough to find those sharp cases! The price on this is pretty good that’s why I’m asking about it. Anything else obvious jump out.

Talk to bobswatches.com. They are local to you in Huntington Beach. They can find a no questions great one for you.

If not I might have a local seller of one with what might be a correct year you whipper snapper. Although I’m not sure if it’s correct, and not 100 sure if he would sell it...

Whether or not it is a good deal is often relative to the price. Good luck with your search.

@Foo2rama I've been keeping an eye on bobs watches. He has one but it is quite bad and I think his prices a little on the steep side. I'll still keep an eye out.
@jaguar11 the list price on this is $6780, a pretty good deal to me considering. You never know if the seller is just some person who saw other 16800's (with non maxi dials) going for around 7k and listed this accordingly. The seller never responded to me and/or provided pictures so I consider it a red flag and will continue on the hunt.

They are a dealer... but they do haggle and can hunt. But I’m sure you’d be able to hunt just as well 😀.

Hmm... you should do a little more homework.. nothing wrong with the cyclops. Date wheel also correct.

Hi,

Good watch minus the polished case. Good daily wearer. Excellent matching dial and hands. Maybe very very late service replacements.

Does it have a bracelet?

And yes, serial number check and movement pics are a must...

Also here's my late serial 16800 matte for reference.

Thanks for the reply. Yes it has a bracelet with it. I def thought the date magnifier looked okay to me too compared to brothers 16750. I’m guessing it is a late service replacement dial/hands. Serial number dates from 81-83 depending on which database I look at. I would still like the seller to send some additional pics of the movement and the stamping between the lugs. Hopefully he will get back to me but we’ll see.

Bit late posting but here is a couple of pictures of my 82 matte dial, it's lived a full life & had a polish or two along the way which doesn't bother me as I don't have any safe queens , all my watches get worn .It was the killer patina that did it for me .

Too bad I sold my 1983 Rolex 16800 with working superluminova on the hands and dial a couple of years ago. I wholesaled it for only $5000 to fund another watch.

The last time I checked it only gained 0.3 seconds in 10.4 days on the wrist. My most accurate mechanical, and I should have kept it. My BLNR however only gained 1.2 seconds in 30 days around the same time, so it was only slightly faster than the 16800.

At 5k I’d have taken it 😁 It’s tough to find one with a matte dial at a reasonable price these days so I’m thinking I’ll more than likely end up with one looking pretty similar to your old one.

Oh...the spider dial. Like paying more for a car with a shitty paint job...just my opinion...
