Looking at a 145.022-69 fair market estimate?

Good morning all,

As the title says, I'm looking at buying a 145.022-69 speedy from a local seller. I have a few pics from him, but no movement shot at the moment. He's great to deal with and I've purchased several chronos from him in the past without issue.

I'm not familiar enough with the subtle differences in these watches to judge the correctness or value accurately and I'm hoping some of you may be able to help based on the sellers pics.

Seller is asking $7500USD

Thanks All!

The dial and hands are attractive. The case seems nice. Original pushers. I believe the crown has 24 teeth - if it's the right word and as far as I can count on these pictures. Caseback is good too.
I agree on the bezel.
Is the bracelet a 1175 / 47 ? Is the watch serviced ?

I'll check with him on the bracelet. The movement is serviced, and I've had no issues with any of my several previous purchases on serviced watches from him.

Is the bezel just unattractive, or incorrect?

I'm looking at speedmaster 101 and other 145.022 threads to educate myself along with asking for thoughts.

Thanks again, all input is appreciated!

Yeah, probably not the bezel from that watch. My main question would be re if the dial and hands have been re lumed. I'd have to get a MUCH closer look. My 69s don't have that much color, but I'm skeptical whenever they are too perfect and match the hands perfectly. But it's a good-looking watch with a bezel that doesn't match the rest.

I can't even estimate how many Speedmasters I've worn since the early 90s, but somehow my bezels never got torn up. This bezel belongs on a watch with a worn case and lesser dial, in my opinion.

If this watch was being sold collector-to-collector, like here on OF, I would expect to see it in the $6000-$6500 asking range. It might even sit for a bit and fall below $6k. The bezel is holding it back, I'd call it a Good- watch with a poor bezel IMO so for me its a $5500-$6000 watch at best as it sits based on pictures shown.

So far, from my reading and your assessments, the long lume, medium s, step, t swiss t dial looks correct. DON bezel corectness depends on serial range, but is not consistent with the level of wear on the rest of the watch.

we all agree that the bezel is too worn to be the original one.
is it a problem ? in my opinion not because it will probably resell a little more expensive than a DNN of the time that you will find. at worst it will be a lossless operation.

there remains an attractive dial, a case with sharp edges, original pushers, a nice caseback, and IMO an interesting bracelet with rare endlinks.

if I were to sell it and assuming the mechanism is correct, I would advertise it at $7500 and never drop it below $6500.

Yes, we would need the serial number to know whether a DON or DNN would be correct. I'm a little leery of concluding that the bezel is not original based solely on wear, but it's certainly in bad condition. So original or not original, the bezel is holding back the watch's value. Of course, you can always replace the bezel if you get the watch for the right price.

The old rule of 'buy the seller' is no problem here. He's a good friend and I really wouldn't have a problem overpaying a little dealing with him.

Considering other fees that apply when buying from other sources it's sounding to me like it's on the high end but not unreasonable.

I've requested serial and movement pics. I'll update when he gets them to me.

IMO, the asking price is at least $1000 above what I would consider a fair price. This is just my own personal opinion based on watches I have bought and sold. Everyone has different experiences, opportunities and desires, so it could be worth more or less to someone else. I'm not sure what other selling platforms you are thinking of, but in many case, e.g. eBay, the seller pays the fees. And because of the condition of the bezel, the watch will not be easy to sell at top dollar.

If you don't mind giving the seller an extra $1000, then you're a good friend indeed. But to turn things around, if he is a good friend, perhaps he should give you a good price, especially considering that you are a good buyer and will be paying cash. 😀

It's tricky when someone that you consider a friend puts a high price on something. Obviously it's awkward to haggle, both because of the friendship and also because it could have a chilling effect on future deals. So in your place, I would probably just walk away before you make him jump through a bunch of hoops. This is one of the most common Speedmaster references and there is no reason to overpay.

Agree with Dan. From those pictures you certainly cannot definitively say the bezel has been replaced.

And I also agree it's not the originality that is the problem for me. I noted it was not from that watch mostly to point out it's too rough to match the watch, which I do believe would show much more case damage/polishing and likely other issues if the bezel wear is from actual use. The value depends on whether the dial and hands are re lumed for me. A re lumed dial lowers value significantly for me, probably more than polishing. Dials are by far the most important aspect in pricing, in my opinion.

I looked at the lum again, and just can't see well enough to know for sure one way or the other. No one else seems concerned, but maybe my old eyes are deceiving me. When I see hands with no loss of material, perfect color match, and no discoloration in lum, I am suspicious. Mostly, with all the banging into things the bezel shows, I expect some lum to have been shaken loose.

If he is a friend, I would ask him to agree to refund you if the extract comes back incorrect.
