Longines ID Help

Hi all,

I found a shop in my area that has a treasure trove of vintage watches and came across these two today and need some help ID'in them. They are both mechanical wind and 14k solid gold (so I'm told). They look pretty good and they're running. Both are probably just under 30mm in width. One was engraved with a date of 1950 (brown strap) and the other one (black strap) was estimated at being from around 1955.

While researching, I found one similar to the first one on chrono24, but the seller didn't have a lot of information about it and is also marketing it as a ladies watch, which today it certainly would be, but I don't think it was then. https://www.chrono24.com/longines/a...58514k-gelbgold---handaufzug-o--id6917210.htm

The second one I haven't been able to find. Any ideas? Additionally, the seller is asking the same price for each of them and I'm curious to know if one is more valuable than the other. His prices are not bad, but I don't have a large budget for this stuff, so I would only get one or the other since I have my eye on some other things as well. I am aware that the crown is bent on the one and has a drooping numeral.

I'm sorry I don't have any extra pictures, I didn't want to be super rude and ask him to take them all apart and photograph them. I was already taking up their time sifting through a box of stuff I mostly can't afford, (LeCoultre, Zenith, Omega, Zodiac, Longines, Rolex, Enicar, Tissot, Bulova, Universal Genenve, etc. etc. etc. it was ridiculous) so I just took a couple of quick snaps of these ones since I couldn't figure out quite what they were and they both had really interesting dials and case details to them.

Anyway, I would love to know what these are if any experts out there want to help and what the shape of that second one would generally be described as. Thanks!

(Also available and under consideration is a lovely Movado Kingmatic with a linen dial which is also 14k gold. It has really nice movement and I'll include a picture of it just for fun. I may also have to go back and get the blue Bulova Wrist Alarm and Zodiac Astrographic SST I saw too so I can get my 70's fix. And maybe that 70's Tissot PRS 516. Someone please talk me off the ledge before I lose all my money).

The dial on the second one looks suspicious to me; the "LONGINES" is not centered and the font is wonky. The other two look good from what I can see, but more photos are needed. Price for a 30mm watch should be low.

Where is this shop? 馃榾

The first one is a case that's common among many brands, and came in 14k solid gold or rolled gold capped. The second is a redial, in the same kind of generic case.

Yeah, I'm sorry about the pictures. I know they are crapola. The Kingmatic is really nice looking in person actually and it runs beautifully. It's a shop in Philly.

I was also thinking that because of the small size they should be more affordable (works for me since my wrist is only 6"). However, this dealer claims that lots of places won't even save and service the vintage gold ones because they don't want to bother with all of that if they could get more for scrap now. I don't know enough to know if that's true, but that's very sad to me if it is, particularly since I have a thing for gold watches.

The dealer wasn't pulling your leg - most of them are melted because they don't bring big $$$ on the open market.

You're on the 7th Street side of Jeweler's Row (Sansom), correct?

Thank you. As someone new to this, what was it about the second one that looked like a redial...is it that the part of the numeral has fallen and the color? The font? Guess I'll skip that one and get the weirdo Zodiac instead.

Shop was on 8th street. You have someone good on 7th? That's so sad that they really are being melted. I guess business is business though. That sucks. This is why more women need to buy watches though...most of these vintage ones are just the right size for the ladies.

See my initial response for my thoughts on the second dial.

Both.

Shop was on 8th street.

On the southern side, between Sansom and Walnut? Does it have a black & yellow facade / awning?

It's Switt (oh god I hope I didn't blow my secret new place...for the love of sweet baby Jesus people leave my 70's watches alone so I can go buy them). The young guy there is the watch person and he has a nice eye and he has more vintage stuff than most around the row. I think the first Longines in question is a little overpriced since it's too small for most, but some of the other stuff isn't totally unreasonable since he said he's serviced most of them already. What do I know though? (Answer: not much, which is why I asked).

I know that entire area. My wife & I had an apartment on 6th and Lombard before we were married and both worked in the city.

Recognizing font takes experience, but anyone with eyes can see that the word is not centered properly. So train yourself to look for symmetry and precision.

That's a nice block, right across from the basketball courts! Still nearby enough to comb Jeweler's row on occasion, or did you flee entirely? Too bad you don't live there now, you might have seen Joel Embiid dunking on neighborhood Joe's from your window on occasion.

We're in NJ now, right across the bridge. I used to enjoy being only a few blocks from Jim's Steaks on 4th & South, and Hot Bagels on 3rd between South and Bainbridge. I happen to have a secret place or two (if they're still there) where I mined a few gems, including a sweet vintage Aquadive, for pennies.

I see it now. Once you see it you really can't unsee it. Thanks for the tip. Feel dumb not noticing it earlier. The numeral falling off should have been a pretty big indicator to look closer.

Ahhh Hot Bagels. One of the handful of places that you can get a reliable bialy in these parts. Feel free to PM your secrets anytime! I work across the bridge and have come to appreciate the charms of Jersey. Anyway, I'm jealous of your Aquadive already. Aquadives from the 60's and early 70's have wonderful colors and shapes to them. Wish I could stumble upon one for pennies. Unfortunately, word seems to be out on weirdo pieces of that era.

Sun dried tomato bagel with horseradish cheddar cream cheese. 馃グ ::psy::
Shut the front door, that sounds amazing. Might be reason enough to stray from the bialy.
