Lightly polished or over polished?

I'm finding it difficult to judge from photos whether the case and lugs are lightly polished but still reasonably good, or whether they're completely over-polished. The medallion looks good, in my opinion.
And how would you assess this movement? I see some discoloration/dirt.

I think the watch has been polished to attract the ‘oh shiny!’ crowd.

The edge of the bezel looks a little soft but not terrible.
On close inspection, I also think the lugs are much better than they first appear due to the photography- again to appeal to the shiny! brigade - but difficult to tell from the pic.

From the single grainy pic, the movt looks ok - a 63 year old movt is going to look a little lived in - but you should always factor in a service.

The crown is a replacement.

The dial might be marked - or the marks could be on the crystal.

As a general note - you really must try to provide better and comprehensive pics if you want a proper assessment of a watch.

Thanks!

I find it annoying that so many sellers send blurry, overexposed pictures, even when you ask for good ones.

It's a 168.004. The original crown is no longer available, but I think the replacement crown is okay?

The dial is marked, as you said. Do you think it's bad, or is it „normal patina“?

Agreed.
The replacement crown really isn't that bad - and somewhat easier to use.

The marks on the dial are a personal choice and how much tolerance you have for damage.

I personally wouldn't accept marks like this as it has a 'grubby' appearance and could be even worse in normal lighting.
Also, is that a scratch on the dial between 9&10?

Can I encourage you to post all the pics available when you post a thread please - it makes life so much easier when your asking for help.

Is there an inner case back pic?
are there any other case or dial pics?

The facets on watches are difficult to capture in photos.
E.g. the lug looks really quite good in this pic

but not so much here

Marks are on the dial IMO, they are on the same spot with pictures from different angles

If you think about buying it please provide the asking price

I also think the scratch between 9&10 is on the dial. The price is €1800, possibly a bit too high considering the condition of the dial?

Too much for the dial damage, there are better deals out there

9 o'clock scratch is on the crystal IMO but for this price you should pass this one

As fond as I am of these references, they do not command the price of doglegs and even with the BOR, €1800 is too much for a grubby dial.

I suspect we are seeing a trickle down effect of those who just want a pie pan and just don’t know any better.

By the way the watch was described in the advertisement as 168.005.

the case back is hard to see and looks like a '5' but an .005 case back wouldn't fit a .004 mid case.

True, it looks more like a 5, but it should actually be a .004, right? It's not that important though, since I'm not tracking the clock any further.

Thanks for your opinions!

Pictures are really low resolution. The one with the dial is 450 x 450 pixels. Crazy to spend that much money based on such lousy pictures. 👎

Yeah, it's always risky to buy based on bad quality photos. There really is no reason to have low quality pics nowadays because you can get the below Seamaster photo quality with couple hundred costing phone without any special lighting. And then the below De Ville pic is the quality what reputable professional sellers provide.

That said, I too have sometimes pulled the trigger even though photos were bad if the deal seemed exceptionally good.
