WHEN I SAW THIS THREAD I HAD A LOOK AT THE HIPPOCAMPUS ON THE BACK OF MY 52 YEAR OLD WATCH. NOW, WE KNOW THAT CASE BACK ENGRAVINGS CAN WEAR DOWN, BUT WHAT COULD EXPLAIN UNEVEN WEAR ON ONE SIDE OF THE CASE OF AN UNPOLISHED WATCH?

The engraving on my pre-moon105.012.65 has worn down more on the right side than the left. I wonder why? I've hardly worn it in the 14 years I've owned it. Could it be because my Dad spent years using his left hand to change gear on column shift cars in the UK??? Every time you change gear with an old column shift lever, your wrist rotates in order for you to grip the lever, which is under the steering wheel. My Dad wore his Speedmaster on it's1171/633 everyday. He also drove many miles everyday, for many years.

During the 60's and 70's Dad owned 3 old German Borgward Isabella cars (not as nice as the one pictured). Plus he owned a Ford Consul and a Vauxhall Victor. By the time he bought them they were quite old. I never realised how cool they were. This was only 25 years after the war and I remember the kids, where I lived in London, used to give me a hard time because my Dad bought old German cars.

ALL OF THESE CARS HAD COLUMN, MANUAL CHANGE, GEAR LEVERS TO THE LEFT, UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL. THAT'S A LOT OF MOVEMENT, OVER A LOT OF YEARS, WITH THE CASE BACK IN CONTACT WITH HIS WRIST..... JUST THINKING OUT LOUD ON THIS ONE CHAPS???

Don't know if it's the actual cause of the case back wear... but for a, low paid, working class guy back in the 60's & 70's, he had a very cool watch and some old but cool cars.

Always liked the little guy.

I kinda knew about the origin but looked it up anyway. Hippocampus comes from both Phoenician and Greek mythology, and are said to have served the God of seas, earthquakes and horses – none other than Poseidon. They would draw his chariot, or he was often seen riding one. Hence why they are commonly referred to as Poseidons horses. The name hippocampus comes from the Greek ‘hippos’ which means horse and ‘kampos’ which means sea monster.

And I believe it was inspired to be used by Omega by decorative cavalli (horses) on gondolas in Venice. Hence the release of the recent special edition Omega there.

Mine have been seen here many times before..........

I am no expert but read somewhere that you can get the horsy back w acid engraving. Apparently that is how it was done then. No idea if factually accurate but food for thought . Nice ride btw .
