No other watch comes close to the Speedmaster's iconic design, historical significance, and timelessness. I can't wait to get my hands on some vintage models later this year!
Yes it is, the best watch of all time... ex aequo with dozens of others... Take a walk there's a big world out there...
Doesn't make the list. http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/The_Official_List_of_the_Best_Things_in_Existence
Hi I have to disagree as being "BEST WATCH OF ALL TIME ". I really hate absolutes.... just no wiggle room. What's going to happen now... members will post counterintuitive examples.... Please @OmegaRolex it not a issue for a member to be in love with a model and you can share your opinion but that your opinion.... people will agree and some disagree ...... as @tyrantlizardrex pointed out you post omitted " In my humble opinion " The above are my opinion and your mileage may vary. Good Hunting Bill
So just with a few random shots from my phone, watches that are "better" than a 321/861/1861 Speedmaster for given situations. Professional deep water diving: Being a pilot in need of multiple timezones: Being a modern astronaut who needs to time a lot of stuff, and have an alarm function: Looking extra fancy:
Good luck with the hunting - Curious to see what you end with! Nothing like getting what sings to you.. Cheers!
This thread title is amusingly provocative. It reminds me of being at school in London in the 1960's. If we liked a girl and wanted her to respond... we would run up behind her and kick her up the arse! As a strategy it had limited success, but it certainly provoked a response. In a similar 'red rag to a bull' manner I expect a few of the non-Speedy fans to be all over this thread. Fortunately I only own two old watches so the choice is easier for me. One of my old watches is a Speedmaster and is far better, than the other watch, at telling me what time it is.
Swimming? It's made out of metal!!! Take it off mate.. You'll float better! And you won't keep grazing your left earole!
I look at my Speedy and think it's the finest watch ever designed - - - for it's purpose. I wouldn't wear it diving. I believe in using the best tool for the individual job. So while the Speedy is definitely my favorite I don't think you can crown any single watch as "best ever." Coolest - sure. Most storied history - sure. But that's as far as I'd be willing to go.
I wouldn't be too harsh on the TO because I think he just had a tremendous phase of Speedmaster appreciation and love and opened this thread out of emotions and too much endorphins. I know this feeling very well, it's something only the Speedy can do to you.
Mwah. Or a very nice Seamaster bumper from the 50's....... Stick with @Bill Sohne 's advice... I mean, in the very end, it is about style.... My 2KSh
I guess the thread was meant to be intentionally provocative and maybe you were also fishing for complements about the "Grail" Speedmaster, but I would like to offer an alternative concept of "best" and "historically significant". Particularly when we are talking about vintage watches. My alternative watch in question is not iconic, indeed there is very little of significance even written about the manufacturer (Camy), other than Raymond Weil worked there for over 25 years before starting his own company. Despite this, my little Camy Elrex three-hander has huge personal historical significance. It's original owner was (deep breath) my grandfather. So what, there are lots of grandfather's watches out there? This particular grandfather, was the Chief Flight Inspector at Castle Bromwich Aerodrome during WW2, I guess working under the famous test pilot Alex Henshaw. He would have been responsible for final quality sign off for each and every Spitfire (perhaps the Lancasters too) that left Castle Bromwich. Based on stories from my Grandmother and Mom, he would also have flown these aircraft from time to time. Sadly most of his flying gear, pilot's licence, photos with the test pilots etc were dumped by my Grandmother in a state of severe mourning after he died of a heart attack in 1964. All that remains are his driving licence, his Special Constabulary medal, a copy of the Holy Bible dated 1903 and of course his Camy watch, which I guess was purchased sometime between the mid 50s to early 60s. So, this is my best watch of all time and it certainly has historical significance....to me. Would a greater vintage watch such as a Speedie or Sub have more significance? Without some provenance and relevance to me I think it would be just an expensive trinket. As @tyrantlizardrex puts it, a little humility would not be out of place.
