So a friend let me borrow his older SMP as I've been contemplating the ceramic model. The older model isn't as tall by around 1-2mm or so, but the newer model definitely appeals to me more; I didn't really expect that as I'm a sucker for a wave-dial.
Borrowed and wore a friend's wave dial for a week as I was contemplating a purchase. Went to a dealer for 20 minutes to check out the deep blue ceramic. I ended up on the left. Couldn't be happier. Only thing I liked more about the wave was the slightly shorter height, but it is more than made up for with that spilled-fountain-pen-blue pool I see everytime I look down on my wrist.
Another vote for the ceramic. I think it's a much more timeless style that will always look good on the wrist.
I agree that the ceramic does look more contemporary, but that's not surprising - it is an 'update' after all. The wave dial looks more 'classic' than 'tired' in my opinion. I have both the original 2531 and the last of the wave dials - the 2220.80 (with the applied logo and indices). These additions are enough to make a difference so I'm sure with the ceramic there are definitely sufficient differences to substantiate squeezing both into your collection [emoji6]. I've yet to get a ceramic but I've been teetering on the edge for a good while. The additional thickness, especially when compared to the 2531, has been putting me off somewhat - the original really does sit on slim wrists uniquely well. Anyway, here's some wave dial pics to present the 'classic not tired' case:
As much as I love the classic wave dial, the ceramic beats it all day for me, that dial really is mesmerizing to look at.
The waves are classic, but seeing the two next to each other and I am drawn towards the simple dial on the left.
