Will say it again, when I was doing marketing (for a brand in its day bigger than Rolex….cough cough 😉) the old boss used to say.

Every Rolex you buy your paying for a months billboard somewhere in the world. Smart marketing….you include it in the price of every product.

Their famous steel in their cases is the same steel used in a Vat at a chemical or food/wine plant.m

Hah! Did you hear that @krogerfoot?! 😁

(Who loves you, Kay.)
It’s as Professor Trefusis says, all that really matters is that you still have your wealth. Without your wealth, you really don’t have anything, do you?

I drive a merc and have been told it's an old man's car so I'm leaving this thread. I only came here to have a go at Kev and Mikey... 😁

A Mercury is an old man's car.

Rolex is a great example of cognitive dissonance at work as much as it is marketing.

I'd absolutely agree that contemporary Breitling and Tag Heuer are not as well made as Omega. I'd also agree that Rolex's marketing and brand awareness are second to none -- virtually every adult consumer has heard of Rolex, many would have no idea what AP and Patek are all about. That being said, not to knock Rolex, but I don't think that Rolex builds a watch that is any better than Omega. In fact, I would say that Omega's movement technology is superior, but their marketing leaves much to be desired. When it comes to haute horology, however, Rolex isn't even close to Omega as Rolex doesn't produce any sophisticated complications whereas Omega has produced a tourbillion among others.

I think I agree on pretty much everything you're saying. My comparison was more directed towards the comparison of Tag + Breitling to Omega + Rolex, rather than comparing Omega and Rolex directly, which is a whole debate in and of itself.

The only thing I know is, for me, the Speedmaster is about performance, province and history. It's salient moment was during Apollo 13, when 3 brave men, with everything on the line, all the computers were down and life itself depended on the accuracy of a 14 second burn, the Speedmaster delivered. The fact that virtually every mission since the 60's, the face of the Speedmaster was what every Astronaut saw. That history, involving bravery, fortitude and perseverance, skill and training is what the Speedmaster on my wrist represents to me. Heritage is what defines the Speedmaster, not some hack ranting about residual or resale profits. I've owned 3 Rolex watches, a Submariner, an Explorer and an Air King, not one of them kept time worth a damm and only the Air King was comfortable to wear. I've been wearing my 3861 Sapphire Sandwich on the new bracelet for almost 3 years, it's comfortable, accurate and legible and is a delightful combination. That's what defines a satisfying timepiece to me. Not some hacks opinion on YouTube.

I'd agree. Omega is a great value (most models readily available for purchase and the cost/quality equation works out. Even moreso second-hand. Add too that the Speedmaster being an iconic watch that would make for a great one-watch collection and you couldn't go wrong with starting with a Speedmaster. Water resistance would be the only downside.

There are some people, mostly Watchmakers whose opinions I value. Kevin is not among them.

Any other observations or comments on this?

How could there be?

Everyone will have their own definition of luxury, entry-level or not, and this will reflect - at least in part - their identify, so there will never be any agreement and quite a bit of fuel for disagreement. That said, it's always fun to compare if it can be done in a cordial way.

In this case, everyone's said their piece starting with Mr. O'Leary, so comparison over really.

Hardly a comprehensive or well researched article.
Doesn’t look like they made any contact with KO at all.

I think he is to business people what Tim Sykes is to traders. Or something.

Or maybe it's just his face?
