OK, First time ever I ask for advice on a purchase. I hesitate posting on the Rolex forum because I'd hate to just register to post and then leave. At least here I've been a member for a bit.

2 dreams I had, to find a Rolex 5512 and to find a birthday year watch I like. And then I found a 1971 (birth year) 5512. Here's the info and what I know.

- They Guarantee authentic with a 2 year parts warranty as well
- Purchase insured, 14 days money back guarantee no questions asked
It's a 1971 Rolex 5512 all parts are genuine and not refurbished. (It is being serviced now on my request and the acrylic polished.
- They admit the bracelet is the only part not genuine it is from a 16800 submariner
I had some doubts about the bezel as the late 5512 often had the kissing 40, apparently their insurance appraisals and watch authenticator had similar doubts but can find no proof that it has been replaced. If it has it seems to be from another 5512 (this is the only tricky part for me, but I can leave with it.
- Because it is a transitional model the case back (not the case just the back) is 5513, but it apparently is well known from this models to have case backs not matching the exact case (I checked with another watch expert and that seems to be true, although I was surprised by it.
Dial hallmarker Rolex Oyster Perpetual 660ft=200m Submariner Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified Swiss - T < 25

I'm posting pictures. Thoughts? And in your opinion what is fair pricing?

I should add I do not mind the wear and slight marks on bezel etc. it is a 1971 watch after all.

Looks great.Gotta love the easy-access lug holes on a vintage Rolex...it makes swapping bracelets/straps so pain free.
Enjoy your 5512!

Thank you!!

Actually yes, I was surprised by how easy it is with that system. Being the first time I get a Rolex I didn't know what to expect. Must ay though, I love the look of the Rolex bracelet but the quality of the Omega ones is better.

👍 did not know these were equipped with hesalite crystals. I'd prefer the bracelet, non-leather look. 😎

Maybe it's some other acrylic or plastic and not Hesalite. I honestly don't know the difference between them so I was just using the term.

Call it Hesalite, Plexiglass, etc....it's all the same stuff. I just refer to them as acrylic to cover the bases.

Anyway, congrats on a very nice one! If I didn't have the 1680 Red Sub, I would be looking for a nice 5512 or 5513. I like the domed crystal and clean look of a no date model quite a lot...

The above reference calls it “Superdomed” Plexiglas
I love this link. It took me thru the the new XKE to the Martin Baker and Bremont watch collaboration. To get the MBI watch you had to have lived through the ejection from a jet with a Martin Baker seat. I wonder how rare it is?

Thank you Archer, that's kind of how I felt, not being a chemist or a true expert it's just all one to me.

On the dome here's a pic. As I've said before I know little about Rolex, so not sure if this is super dome, regular dome or thunder dome. I initially learned about the 5512 because of the Steve McQueen connection. Then read about the history of it being the first Rolex with the crown protector and iconic shape... When I saw one actually from 1971, my birth year, I took it as a sign and jumped on it. I think that makes it a less collectible than the earlier models, but it's my birth year and I like the 4 line. Also, learned after the fact this is in fact the model McQueen had, 1970's chronograph certified. Not that that makes me cool, but It's a funny reference.

Jesús, that is super domed indeed. Why did they accentuate yhe done so much, is it for under water viewing angle or something?

Great looking watch sir! Reminds me of my PO with the large numerals on the bezel. Wish my birth year had some cool Omega's in it. Sadly I haven't found much that I like.

Very nice; the lug holes were pretty much on the Subs up until the M serials (IIRC) which is only a few years back 2007. So it doesn't take much vintage to go there. I do find it interesting the crap the older Rolexes take over the bracelets; they were tried an true and just worked great. OK, there are fancier bands out there and Rolex has given in to the demands of the market place but frankly I like the simplicity of the old ones. They're pretty much bullet proof. Also, FWIW, it's really not to expensive to have the bracelets rebuilt like new. I just had that done on my Mark II by the same guy who's known for his work on the Rolex ones.

I think that was only on the 14060M the 16610 switched from the 93150 to a SEL bracelet that did away with the lug holes earlier than that from memory

Well, it's not the original 5512 bracelet anyway.

I like the look of the bracelet, but it feels flimsy to me compared with modern steel bracelets. In any event I am currently wearing a leather vintage strap.

Yea the 93150 on my 1680 jingles quite musically like a kitten with a bell around its neck from the endlinks, its pretty comfy though and being able to micro adjust it over a wide range with a wooden toothpick is a feature I miss on many modern watches.

Very nice watch. A birth year 5512 would be a dream come true for me.
