I've owned a couple of Omegas for years now, but I just acquired my new favourite Omega at auction - a 1956 Constellation in solid 18k gold. With my new-found love, I figured I would join the community and share what I know and learn what I can.

My Omega collection includes:

1974 Seamaster/Geneve "franken watch"
1970s Seamaster Quartz that my dad owned

If you look at the numbers on mine, can you let me know if it appears older or newer than your own?
I have a feeling it's from the mid-70s, but my Dad isn't here to ask...

 

Could be mid-70s, the lugs are slightly different to mine which was made about 1979/80. The information we need is inside the case, so get a watchmaker to open it up and take clear photos of the movement and the inside of the case-back.

There is a snippet of information you could get without opening it. The early quartz watches had the movement calibre engraved on the back. It will be a 4 digit number like 1342 (on mine), that will give us a year range.

 

mine also says 1342 and I the serial number and "version" (as a guess) are also visible in my pic above.
however, I can't seem to find a "serial number dating site" for the Quartz movement watches as the calibre serial is only 6 digits.

 

It starts with 43, so the complete serial number of yours is 43xxx591, so according to the Intarwebs it was made in 1978.

 

Ah, missed that pic. The 43 is part of the serial number. Mine is 43631036 which makes them pretty close. Most of the information we have on these is in the Ranfft database of movements ( http://www.ranfft.de/cgi-bin/bidfun-db.cgi?10&ranfft&&2uswk&Omega_1342 ) which gives a 42... serial 1342 as made in 1979. But as @ahartfie posts differently above dating serial numbers is guesswork at the most optimistic. These watches are not the glamour models that have been intensively researched

Although I bought mine in late 1982 it may well have been sitting in the jeweller's display for a couple of years.
