·They are remarkably well made and feel good. A couple of years ago I tried on a Grand Seiko 36000 Hi-Beat and while the watch head was even better quality than the 42mm Rolex Explorer 2 I was wearing, the bracelet wasn't. I don't know if that's changed yet but if they've made them as good as the Rolex ones there's nothing better at that price point. Why don't people spend their money on a slightly cheaper but better quality (and in some case arguably better looking) Grand Seiko? If it were five years ago and I was planning to buy my Rolex and I'd seen the GS on a bracelet as good as the Rolex's would I have bought it? Quite possibly. Would I now, in hindsight? Yes, because Rolex's aftercare has let me down and because I prefer the design of the cleaner GSs (without power reserves). In answer to your question it's a few things including quality, desirability, marketing, clever brand positioning and I'm sure lots more.
